The boys and I looked at Stephanie, confused. "Bunny, what do you mean you're not going to school?" I asked her. "I don't feel good," she said as she sat on the stairs. "Maybe I'll go next year."
"You don't look sick," Jess says softly. Stephanie slouches and frowns. "Is this better?" she asks. Joey walks over to her and sits down next to her. "Well, the face is almost there. Give it kind of a..." he demonstrates a "sick" face. Stephanie sucks in her bottom lip and squints her eyes. "Like that, and throw in a real hacking cough," Joey instructs, pretending to cough.
Stephanie mimics him. "Come on, you're gonna miss the bus," D.J. calls out as she returns to the house. Stephanie glances at her and gives her best pretend cough. "Steph, are you okay?" D.J. asks, concerned. "See, now you're tricking people," Joey remarks.
"D.J., you can go ahead. Steph is a little nervous about her first day of school, but we'll make sure she gets there," I tell her. D.J. nods. "Okay," she replies, looking at Stephanie. "Steph, see you there," she says as she leaves. I walk up the stairs to ensure D.J. safely gets on the bus before closing the door.
