Off lives with his pregnant wife in a house in the city. Everything is peaceful and quiet until one day, two siblings, Jennie and Gun, move into the house next door.
Why does he suddenly feel like his life has changed forever?
This story came about...
Gun was in the kitchen looking for birthday candles when his phone rang.
"Hi, Cami! We're waiting for you to blow out the candles. I know you had a fight with View yesterday, but you can't miss your nephew's birthday because of that. I'll be cross with you..."
"But, Piglet, I don't want to see her!"
"Well, you should've thought about that before you started dating each other. Both of you are part of my family, so even if you argue, you'll have to find a way to get along. I expect you here in half an hour. I repeat: half an hour, Cami. You can make up later, but my little boy doesn't deserve to bear the brunt of your fallout."
"Fine, Ami. I'm on my way..."
"Good, I'm glad you've come to your senses."
He hung up just as Jimmy walked into the kitchen.
"Nong, your husband asked me to come and help you with the birthday cake. He's busy holding my son... Sometimes I'm afraid he's going to steal him."
Gun smiled. Off loved spending time with kids. As if having their own children, Sammy and Ben (named after a Star Wars character, of course), wasn't enough, he always invited their nephew over or took the kids to Jennie's house to play.
Jennie and Jimmy lived next door, in their old house, so even though Gun now lived with Off, they saw each other often.
"Don't worry, we've got enough children already. I won't let him steal yours."
Gun took the cake out of the fridge and placed it on the kitchen counter to put the two candles for their little one's age.
"Jimmy, I need you to help me talk to your sister. Cami doesn't want to come because of their fight, and honestly, I'm tired of it. The kids adore them, and they shouldn't be caught in the middle every time they argue."
"I know, Nong. I promise I'll talk to her. In fact, give me a moment, and I'll ask her to call Cami so we can cut the cake."
Jimmy left the kitchen, and Gun felt relieved to have one less thing to worry about. It was best to wait a little longer before bringing out the cake. A few moments later, Jimmy returned.
"Come with me, Nong."
Gun followed him and saw Camila and View standing by the gate, holding hands as they talked.
Closer to the house, around a table, were Paula and Ceci, Jennie, Lia, Off's parents, and Off himself with Nong Fourth, his sister's son. Ben was with his grandmother, who gazed at him adoringly, while Sammy and Tommy made funny faces to make him laugh.
Jimmy stepped outside and sat between Off and Jennie, who were chatting animatedly.
"Well, brother-in-law, it's time I take my baby back."
Off smiled and carefully handed the baby to him. Then he got up and joined Gun, who had returned to the kitchen. He walked over and wrapped his arms around Gun's waist.
"Feeling tired, sweetheart?"
Gun wrapped his arms around Off's neck, standing on tiptoe to kiss him.
"No, I'm fine. I'm happy. Our kids look adorable, and everyone's here. The only one giving me a headache is Cami."
"Well, she's here now. Be patient with them; those two love each other... Peace will come eventually."
Off gave him another kiss.
"Thank you for being my partner, sweety. Even though life isn't always perfect, I feel everything's worth it because I have you."
"Alright, alright... Birthday nostalgia."
Gun smiled without letting go.
"Don't be mean. Put some heart into it," Off teased, pretending to pout.
"You know I love you, Jumpol. You always make me say it. It's going to lose its charm if I say it all the time."
Off lifted Gun and sat him on the counter. Their faces were close.
"I say it all the time, and it never loses its charm or meaning to me."
Gun shook his head slightly; he could never win against this man.
"Fine, I love you, my darling. You make me so happy."
Off embraced him and started kissing him. He loved stealing kisses in the kitchen.
A loud, exaggerated cough interrupted them. Gun looked up to see Camila standing at the door.
"You call me, scold me, and rush me, and when I arrive, you're the one who's in no hurry."
Gun and Off laughed and went to fetch the cake. The three of them walked out into the garden, where everyone began singing "Happy Birthday."
The sun was setting, and the lights of the neighbouring houses began to twinkle. In the wall that once divided them, there was now a door—a connection between two homes filled with love.
Well, that's the end. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
