When they entered the NHK TV studio, a wave of noise hit them—flashes from cameras, bustling staff members arranging equipment, and a few reporters hurriedly adjusting their notepads. The studio was bright, with large digital banners displaying the words "Tokyo Olympics Champions: Japan U18 Women's Basketball Team," and rows of chairs lined up for the press conference. The atmosphere was a mix of excitement and professionalism, with a buzz of anticipation filling the air.
A staff member, or so they assumed, greeted them and gestured for everyone to follow. "Alright, just stay relaxed," she said, her voice cutting through the low murmur. Her calm demeanor was the perfect contrast to the hectic surroundings, and everyone seemed to take some comfort in it.
Seinaru, still holding the iced coffee in her StarFlask, stepped into the room. Being part of Youth World's Prodigal Five, she was used to the spotlight, and press conferences were starting to feel like just another part of the routine.
The team found their seats at the long, sleek table in front of the stage, with cameras aimed directly at them. The reporters sat in rows, some scribbling in their notebooks, while others set up their phones and cameras for live streaming. Chiyo, wide-eyed, scanned the room, clearly overwhelmed.
"I'm guessing we just sit here and answer questions?" she asked, leaning slightly toward Jordan, who nodded.
"Pretty much. Just be ready for anything. They'll probably ask about our strategies, personal stories, and—"
"You're about to find out," the staff member from earlier interrupted, sitting at the head of the table, a comfortable grin on her face as she waved at the team to settle in.
A young woman with a clipboard approached the table. "Alright, everyone. Thank you for being here. We'll be starting in just a minute. Please make sure your phones are off, and we'll begin with introductions."
As the reporters shuffled, Seinaru caught a glance from one of the cameras aimed at her. She resisted the urge to roll her eyes and instead looked back at Utsui, who seemed excited by the whole thing, her eyes twinkling.
"I wonder if they'll ask about your love life," Utsui teased quietly, nudging Seinaru's arm with her elbow.
Seinaru gave her a side-eye but didn't respond, her attention already turning toward the front of the room as the interviewer took a microphone in hand.
The press conference officially began, and the first question was directed to the team.
"What was the hardest part of the competition?"
Kasai, ever serious, responded without hesitation. "The hardest part was that every team we faced had the ability to win. Everyone is skilled and talented, so there's no room for mistakes."
Saito, her gaze just as focused, nodded in agreement. "Everyone's out to prove they're the best, so you have to go out there and show them that you are."
"Cardboard beds." Ymari stated blankly.
The table burst into laughter. Utsui laughed loudest, clearly amused. "Yeah, those were something else," she said, shaking her head with a grin.
The next question was for Utsui. "With the WNBA draft already behind you, what are your plans now?"
Utsui's eyes sparkled at the mention of her future. "After the Tokyo Olympics Tour, I'm heading back to the U.S. I'm ready for the WNBA, but I'll always cherish this experience and the team," she said with a grin.
The interviewer then turned to Hanuka and Ichigo, asking them about their preparations for the upcoming Spring Interhigh.
Hanuka, ever composed, spoke first. "We're pushing ourselves harder every day. Spring Interhigh is huge for us, and we need to be ready for the competition."
