delia had decided it was time to go to the studio once more. she was nearly done with her upcoming album, but needed to add a song or two to the list. so of course she recruited emery to help her. they needed to catch up and delia needed a new song. might as well kill two birds with one stone.

"so are you going to fill me in on what happened in michigan or are we avoiding that topic?" emery asked delia as they entered the building.

the recent brunette shook her head. she was still trying to wrap her mind around that she liked her ex boyfriend's older brother. delia knew though that she needed to tell her best friend.

"to make a long story short, i had a great time with luke and some awkward encounters with jack. texted quinn and he sent me a heart and then i—"

emery gasped, "back up, he sent you a heart?"

"yeah, hold on, i'll show you."

delia quickly grabbed her phone and found quinn's contact. it was the last text exchange between the two. upon realization, delia started to frown. it had been awhile since they had talked. at the same time, what would she say? maybe it was for the best they hadn't communicated.

"aww! and you sent one back!" emery cooed. delia sent her a look to stop it. she got the clue and added, "sorry, you may continue."

emery and delia kept walking to their destination as delia recalled her few days with the hughes family. she explained how that text had sent her into a frenzy. as a result, she ran into the bathroom to call cole.

"hold on, i thought i was getting the short story," emery became confused.

delia shrugged, "i changed my mind. maybe this will end up being good inspiration for a song."

the two stopped in front of the door that led to their room. delia was just getting to the part where she had confided in luke about her feelings.

emery stated, "well, at least you know one hughes who is in favor of these new developments."

"i suppose, but i don't really know how i feel about all of it. i just don't think it should ever be a thing — me and him. i should just run for the hills," delia explained.

it was like a lightbulb when on in emery's brain. she immediately opened the door and ran in. delia still stood by the doorway in shock and concern. what the hell was emery doing?

granted, emery had her quirks when it came to songwriting. she never acted as if her idea was going to evaporate if she didn't write it down immediately. typically, emery would tell delia her idea. not this time though.

delia questioned, "is everything good?"

"i need a piece of paper and something to write with. i got an idea," emery responded.

ryan tedder, delia's usual producer, was already sat in the room. he was messing around with random sounds trying to find a good beat. he has been so use to emery and delia's antics that he didn't even bother looking around when he heard commotion. ryan carried on in his own world.

emery eventually found a napkin laying by ryan's cup and a random pen. she started scribbling without saying a word.

delia, at that point, had walked into the room and closed the door behind her. she stood next to ryan as emery was still writing. delia knew emery would tell her idea eventually so she paid attention to ryan.

"what you got going on over there?" delia asked her producer.

she was always in awe of him. every time they came into the studio, he already had some beat or melody made. everything he touched was magic.

ryan replied, "it's this pop but kind of trap beat. i don't know how to describe it."

delia looked at him sideways. she had no idea what he was talking about. he continued, "hold on, just put these headphones on."

suddenly, delia had a headphones on her head. she didn't even put them on herself. ryan just plopped them on.

before she could say anything, music started playing. delia was stunned from the get go. the first ten seconds had her hooked. the build up was going to be insane.

"holy shit!" delia exclaimed as she took the headphones off.

ryan smiled, "i'm glad you like it! now we just need a story and some lyrics."

"already on it!" emery stated without looking up once from her napkin.

delia still had no clue what she was writing. hopefully, it all made sense with what ryan was working on. she trusted emery though. she was one of the best writers in the industry after all.

"so, what were the two of you talking about before you walked in that has her going wild?" ryan questioned.

he knew their process. delia usually would rant or tell a crazy story and emery would then get some vision for a song. not all delia's songs were made this way. only the ones where delia was going through it.

she answered, "went to michigan and realized i liked my ex boyfriend's older brother."

before ryan could express his reaction, emery spoke finally.

"that's the shortened story. anyways, i have a rough draft for a chorus maybe. i'm not exactly sure yet what it is. i need some other eyes on it," emery announced.

she placed the napkin in front of ryan and delia. the two of them scanned over the words. emery's brain was all over the place but they could decipher her code. even though delia could read everything written on the napkin, she couldn't pull her eyes away from four words.

"run for the hills," delia muttered, remembering that's exactly what she said emery.

ryan looked at delia, "what?"

emery also glanced at the brunette. unlike ryan, she knew exactly what she said and what she was thinking.

"run for the hills. that has to be the title," delia stated. her brain was spinning. she knew exactly what she wanted to right. "but what you wrote, emery, i think it needs to be the bridge. all the repetition, it just makes sense. the chorus should be the part where it says i know it will never be us," delia continued.

emery grinned, "i completely agree."

delia was already dissecting her relationship with quinn and writing all her thoughts and feelings down in her notes app. this was about to be the quickest song they ever wrote.

"perfect, i think this could fit with the beat i already have," ryan clapped his hands.

the three of them worked hard on this song. the two girls were able to capture how delia felt perfectly. and ryan was able to find the beat and rhythm to make the song catchy.

the song was not verbatim to her situation. after all, it wasn't like quinn and delia were dating. she didn't even know if they could ever date and that was the issue. delia had no idea what the future held and she was terrified she was going to get hurt again.
