"So..He showed up drunk at your house?"
"Yes."
"At three in the morning?"
"Yes."
"He told you he liked you."
"Yes."
"And you just stared at him."
"Yes."
"You let him stay with you for the night."
"Yes...."
"And he left before you woke up."
"For the last time, YES!"
"Wow."
This was the only conversation that took place between Alex and I on our drive to school. I didn't want to have to ride her but mum had to run so I eventually had to.
I contemplated over calling Michael for a ride but then that would mean I'd have to sit with Ashton and- probably- Calum. And it would just be awkward because well, Calum doesn't talk much and Ashton...well, he just talks. A lot. And he says the most inappropriate stuff. You'd think Michael had a dirty mouth but that's only because you haven't seen the true Ashton Irwin.
"What are you going to do when you see him in school?" Alex asks, as she pulled into the school parking lot. I shrugged and stuffed my phone into my backpack, fixing my hair in the rear-view mirror.
"Well, you can't just ignore him." She says, looking over to me.
"Look, I don't even know how he's going to react. So let's just wait and see what he does?" I suggest, letting out a sigh because her questions were exhausting me. And it was only eight in the morning. Brilliant.
Once Alex had parked the car, I step out and spot Michael across the lot. A cigarette between his fingers as he takes a long drag of it and blows the smoke into the air, slow and easy. Making it look absolutely effortless and completely harmless.
"I hope he chokes." I hear Alex's voice, a tone of disgust clear as she watched the red head.
"Aww..come on now! You don't need to say such things to cover up what you feel." I coo, pinching her cheek. She gives me a look of horror and swats my hand away. Her cheeks burning a bright shade of red. As red as her hair.
"In your fucking dreaming, Eliza Noel James." She says, through gritted teeth as she abruptly turns away and walks away stomping her feet. Leaving me to stand alone in the parking lot.
I sigh and being to walk towards the school building, looking down at my feet as I walk. Taking this time to think over what happened last night.
It was all so weird. So unreal. Like, you'd never see Luke Hemmings to do something like that. I even pictured him to be an angry or quiet drunk. But, this came off as a surprise. Like, when you open a Christmas present and find a puppy.
Wow, I make no sense.
I look up and I spot Luke standing leaning against the wall. His eyes already on me. I continue to stare until he looks away to look at something else. Anna Hartman. I watch as she walks up next to him and pulls him in for a kiss. He seemed to immediately respond by placing his hands on her hips.
A sharp pain shoots through my chest like someone had just stabbed me in the chest. I don't know why I felt the way I felt. I mean, I know him and Anna are a "thing". And I shouldn't be affected by what they do but the thoughts of them together did hurt. Especially after I'd heard him say she "meant nothing to him". Was he just playing around with her feelings and giving her false hopes?
Was he planning on doing the same to me?
I brushed off the thoughts and quickly hurried towards my class, which was math. I didn't want to attend because then I'd have to be in the same room as Luke and that wouldn't help me get my mind off him. Although, I know that even if he wasn't in the same room as me, he'd be in my head. Why did he have this effect?
I got into math and took a seat behind Alex who huffed when I walked passed her. I rolled my eyes and didn't bother her.
Luke never came to class and that made me wonder about him a lot more. My thoughts consisted of conclusions of him and Anna going at it in the janitors closet, but something inside me said Luke was too classy to do that. I even spent a good couple of minutes wondering if he'd try and make a move on me. I'm not the prettiest of girls but Luke Hemmings is very unpredictable.
*
It was lunch now. Alex and I made our way through the crowd and towards the lunch room, trying our best not to get trampled by the large mass of students. I'd lost all my energy after Physics class and Alex literally has to carry me all the way.
"Finally! We're alive!!" She cheered, dropping me down on our usual lunch table. At which, only Alison was seated. The others were probably off at their clubs or practice or whatever the hell they do. I don't even know what my friends do when they're not around me. I don't care, to be completely honest.
"You seem worn out, Ellie. You okay?" Alison asks, sipping on her coke. I nod, resting my chin on the table and closing my eyes momentarily.
I tried listening to her's and Alex's conversation but I was way too tired to bother. I felt myself drifting off to sleep and opened my eyes because I couldn't let that happen. I lift my head up and see Luke watching me from across the room. His eyes trained on me, a hand in his pocket and his phone in his other hand. I looked away from him and focus on gaze on my hands on the table.
"Hello Eliza." I look up to see Luke standing on the other side of the table, casually looking down at me. I give him a puzzled look and raise my eyebrows.
"Hello Luke." I respond, imitating his formal tone. Making him smirk and his eyes ignite with amusement.
"I would just like to formally invite you for dinner with me tonight." He says, holding his gaze. The smirk still visible. I would love to wipe it off somehow.
"Sorry, but I can't go because I don't want to." I sass, giving him a Two-Can-Play-At-This-Game look.
"I don't believe I asked for your permission." He cheekily responds, leaving me looking like a speechless idiot. Opening and closing my mouth, trying to find the right comeback.
"See you later, Eliza James." He waved, walking away. I failed to wipe his smirk off but I'm not giving up.
In the moment, I'd forgotten Alex and Alison were sat there watching the whole thing take place. I look over to find both of them staring at me. Alison had her mouth hanging open and it took everything within me not to reach over and shut it. Alex, on the other hand, just looked up and gave me a wink.
"I told you so..." She sang, getting up from the table and pinching my cheek.
"This doesn't mean anything." I retort, not in the mood for her nagging.
"Oh sure, it doesn't." She ruffles up my hair and walks in front of me.
