The weight of the Lombardi Estate's grand study seemed even heavier tonight. Donatello sat across from Allesandro, staring at the table that separated them. The flickering light of the fireplace cast long shadows across the room, but it did little to alleviate the discomfort settling in the air. Allesandro's gaze was unwavering, sharp as always, but there was something unspoken in the way his eyes glinted, an odd sort of anticipation.
"Donatello, my boy, you know why we're here," Allesandro, their grandfather said, his voice steady. He didn't need to add more; his words already held the gravity of a thousand unspoken truths. The topic that had been silently lingering in the room for days was now about to come to light.
Donatello shifted in his seat, leaning forward, his elbows resting on his knees as he ran a hand through his hair. "Yeah, I know, Grandfather," he replied slowly, his tone tight. "We're going to talk about Den and I don't like where this is heading."
Allesandro exhaled, a little impatient but with an air of authority that only an elder could carry. "I care about her future, Donatello. That's the only thing that matters right now."
Don glanced over at the papers on the table, a contract, an agreement that neither of them could ever forget. His eyes narrowed. "You're really bringing this up now?" He gestured toward the papers as if they were a physical manifestation of everything that had gone wrong in the past few years. "Divorce? Are you talking about ending her marriage with the leader of Bonten? After all that's happened?"
Allesandro didn't flinch. "I don't see another option. She's stuck in something unhealthy, something that doesn't have a future. I'm not about to sit back and pretend everything's fine."
Don scowled, eyes flicking over to the contract on the table.
'It's like he's deaf. He doesn't listen at all.' Don thought remembering how he and Den tried to argue with him.
He hadn't expected to find this today. The Lombardi way was sometimes a bit too effective for comfort. "How did you even get this?" He pointed at the papers scattered on the table.
Allesandro gave him a dry smile. "Lombardis have their ways."
Don shook his head in disbelief. He then grabbed the paper and read it. "10 million to 100 million dollars if either of them breaks this contract? How childish." He let out a short, incredulous laugh, trying to come to terms with the absurdity of it all. It sounded like something from a bad rom-com, but here it was—staring him in the face.
"Indeed," Allesandro agreed with a small chuckle, his old eyes twinkling. "It's ridiculous. But sometimes, we need to take matters into our own hands. You'll see."
Don reached for the papers, scanning the clauses in disbelief. "Wait, is this a clause about Mikey signing advance divorce papers?"
Allesandro didn't respond immediately, instead allowing his grandson to process the full impact of the situation. "Yes. It's been a precaution. Denise is truly a Lombardi, to add such clause so she will not have the end of the stick." The man then signed. "But who would have thought that she'd fall in love with that barbaric man!" He added, curling his hand out of frustration.
