The sound of the jet engines hummed softly as the private plane glided through the endless blue sky. Inside, the mood was a tapestry of emotions—anticipation, anxiety, and a veil of unease that none could shake. For Manjiro, Den, and the eclectic group of passengers that comprised their small entourage, this was not merely a journey across continents. It was a passage into uncertainty, where pasts would clash, and futures would be decided.
Manjiro, seated next to Den, glanced over at her. She was unusually quiet, her hands resting atop the small tray table in front of her. Despite the stoicism she tried to wear, the tension in her shoulders betrayed the storm brewing within.
"You okay?" he asked gently, his voice low enough that no one else could hear.
Den blinked, pulled from her reverie. She turned to look at him, her gaze meeting his dark eyes—the same ones that always managed to ground her, even in the most chaotic moments. She offered a small smile, but it didn't quite reach her eyes.
"I'm fine," she said, though her tone suggested otherwise.
He reached out and intertwined their fingers. "You're worried," he said plainly. "About your Grandfather..."
Her lips pressed into a thin line, her free hand resting instinctively on Emma's sleeping form next to her. Their daughter, oblivious to the weight surrounding them, had fallen asleep curled against Den's side with a sketchbook and crayons still in her lap. The sight warmed Manjiro, but it was a reminder of the stakes.
"Of course, you should be worried." Don randomly spat as he walked past the couple's chair. Den looks at him menacingly. Like how a bothered sister looks at her annoying brother. Don just smirks as he grabs a magazine on his side, ignoring the killer look of Den.
"Not just him," Den admitted, ignoring her brother's comment. "It's everyone. My grandfather, Donatello, the others... they're not the kind of people who forgive easily. And if they see Bonten as a threat..."
Manjiro squeezed her hand lightly, his expression unreadable. "Let them try," he murmured.
Den let out a sharp breath, shaking her head. "It's not that simple. This isn't just about us. It's Emma, Guini, Bonten..." Her gaze darted to the rest of Bonten seated around the cabin. Koko was tapping away on his laptop, Haruchiyo twirling a knife with boredom etched on his face, Rin and Ran were engaged in some quiet banter, and Kakucho sat silently by the window, observing everything with his calm demeanour.
"They've followed you this far," Den whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "I'm afraid of what might happen because of me."
Manjiro brought their joined hands to his lips, brushing a soft kiss over her knuckles. "We'll face it together then."
Den couldn't respond. Instead, she leaned her head against his shoulder, silently drawing strength from his presence.
Across the cabin, Rin's voice cut through the subdued atmosphere. "Why's it gotta be Italy of all places?" he complained, stretching his arms. "Couldn't we have handled this on neutral ground?"
