She finds them in a cardboard box, shaking from the bitter wind. It's not winter yet, but autumn is promising that frost, sleet, and snow will soon grace the earth.

They don't really trust her. But she can understand that, it's not every day that somebody helps you on the street.

(It's not every day that you find two children in an alleyway.)

The boy curls up into her, and yawns. His brown eyes are slightly tinted yellow. Strange, but not really.

(She's seen weirder, working where she does.)

"You smell cold," he mumbles into her jacket. "Like snow."

Somehow, she believes him.

(Why shouldn't she?)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They are strange, but not in a bad way.

(Not in a metahuman way.)

The girl and the boy are twins, identical except for their gender. Mabel and Dipper, like the constellation.

(Of course, it's not his real name. But he isn't the first to demand to be called by a nickname.)

Somehow, they end up staying. Mabel helps out with whatever she can, while her brother reads science textbooks.

(As well as another book that he won't let her see.)

She brings them to work one day. Mabel and Cisco immediately hit it off, while Dipper and Barry do the same. Mabel tries to set up Iris and Barry after she learns that the man has a huge crush on her.

(She should have known.)

Things don't work out when they meet Wells.

Dipper growls and arches his back, and it's a real growl too, not some kid playing pretend. It's the kind that sends shivers of primal fear down your back and reminds you to lock the door at night.

Mabel hisses, and have her teeth always been that long?

They move to the other side of the room and stay as far away as possible.

(Why?)

Later, they tell her that he smells like lightning. Barry does too, Dipper says. But not like that.

(She wonders how they can tell. But they don't know that he has speed, just that he smells like lightning.)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's the full moon when they tell her the truth, because Dipper has been irritable all day. Mabel says that he has a disorder.

Dipper says that that's an understatement.

(But what is that supposed to mean?)

It's when he turns into a wolf later that night that she realizes the truth. And the twins tell her that even though though they're different they're still human.

Well, not really.

(And maybe that's the moment when she realizes just how much she cares about them. Just how much they are a part of her family.)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's not that much later that they tell the others. Wells wants to run tests, but they don't let him touch them. Barry thinks that it's really cool, and Cisco wants to make a home movie starring them.

As long as Mabel doesn't bite him.

(They don't find out about Barry's heroic activities until a little while later. Both twins think that it's amazing that one of their honorary "uncles" (a title that only Barry and Cisco have, because they still don't let Wells touch them) is a hero.)
