Mabel Pines can feel things.

She can tell what someone is feeling just by listening to their voice and looking at their posture. Even if she can't see them, she can feel what they feel, the emotions spiking in her brain and crawling along her skin.

Dipper is the only one who knows, because they don't keep anything from each other. He may not be the best liar, but Mabel can make him one. People trust when she talks, because she can make them feel what she does.

Gravity Falls is different.

There, it's not just the people and animals that sing with emotion. It's the buildings, the trees, monsters, the food. Everything there is just so alive. Mabel can tell the way that someone is feeling just by touching the wall of her house, and infuse the air with happiness far easier than she could back home in Piedmont.

Every person has a different set of feelings and thoughts. It's... strange, really, for all of the people to have rich and complex emotions instead of the dull ones that her parents and classmates use.

Dipper's always have the underlying spots of paranoia, as well as a thirst for knowledge. Pacifica's emotions hide terror and pain, so Mabel tries to be nice no matter how cruel the other girl is to her.

Mermando's are wet. Saturated with melancholy, that only disappears when he is freed in a rush of hope hope love.

Stan's are a hurricane. They collapse in a swirl of happy pain loss and remember remember remember. He confuses her sometimes, because certain rooms in the house are full of his unhappiness. Especially the room that she and her brother fought over. That one is practically steeped in sadness.

Bill's emotions terrify Mabel. They aren't human or even monster, but instead something else; something that's all sharp edges and laughing. When he possesses her brother, that's scary too. Because his feelings bury themselves deep under Dipper's, pretending to be her brother even as she wonders at why he thinks pain is so funny.

When the portal activates, Mabel can feel Stan's hope hope desperation, Soos's betrayal why why, and Dipper's fear fear please.

But that's not the scary thing. The portal itself is feeling things, leeching out into the air. It rips and sucks at her back, and it's all that she can do to cling to the button.

All of the emotions and the betrayal become too much for her, and she starts to cry.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ford's feelings are weird. He's thankful and angry and confused and distrustful all at once, making the air like a maze.

Dipper's disbelief disbelief stings at the air, and Stan's frustration hope anger clashes with it. Soos is confused hopeful uneasy, and it turns the air into an unhealthy soupy mix.

When the older set of twins tells their story, it's obviously painful. So she gives them as much comfort comfort it's okay as she dares, but it still isn't enough. Mabel now knows that the mark on Stan's back that they thought was a tattoo is actually a burn, and it makes her own shoulder blade twinge. The girl tries to send soothing soothing soothing, but it doesn't really work.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mabel doesn't know how to tell Dipper about what's happening between Stan and Ford. So she just lies instead, giving him calm comfort to ease his nerves. And maybe hers, too.

Her brother falls asleep with a smile on his face, even though he should be more troubled. But it's just the way that Mabel's special magic works.

So while Dipper has good dreams and slumbers peacefully, Mabel stays awake for a long, long time.
