Stanley knows that there's always going to be something up, and it's his job to protect the people of this town. Not as if they're about to be attacked by monsters (although they usually are), but because most of them are at the very least related to those very monsters.
The whole reason that he even threw that t-shirt at Soos when he was a boy is because he could tell exactly what had gone into his creation. Or at least the genetics.
And it didn't help that he knew the boy's father to be a golem-summoner.
Honestly, did he think that the kid wouldn't inherit the gene? It wasn't like witchcraft, where you could learn if you had the knack for it.
That kid's deadbeat father was just lucky that when he bailed out he left the boy with someone who had experience raising an animator. And that he was employed by someone willing to look the other way when Soos first started to raise little lumpy humanoids of clay and mud.
Luckily, he got that under control in the first few weeks. It was maybe the fastest that Stan had ever seen someone get a hold of their new power. The kiddo was so proud that he went around telling everyone that he was magic.
Stan was up to his ears in members of The Society of the Blind Eye when that happened.
And of course there was the matter of Wendy. The conman knew that she was having some trouble, especially after the incident with her mom, so he hired her when he heard that the redhead was looking for a job.
Did she really think that it was a coincidence that all of her off days were on the full moon?
It was common knowledge (at least among members of The Black Sigil) that all of the Corduroy clan were Lycanthropes. Although Stan was pretty sure that Fiddleford had long forgotten. The old man couldn't stop the pang in his chest whenever he saw his old friend reduced to the insanity of his own making.
So when his stupid little brother decided to send his kids up for the summer, Stanley knew that there had to be another reason other than fresh air. His suspicions were proven correct when Mabel fell out of a tree and vanished in midair before re-appearing safely on the ground.
If their expressions were anything to go by, this was a common occurrence.
Well, he appeared to have witches in the family. Ones with an unusual grasp on their powers.
When he saw that journal, he knew.
There was only one person that the third journal had ever worked for. Ever revealed it's secrets to. Ever made any sense to.
And that person was his brother.
But now, this boy, this child, had discovered how to use it, work it, manipulate it.
This was the key to getting his brother back.
As for Mabel...
Every Pine Tree needed it's roots. Every Shooting Star needed grounding. They were each other's anchors.
In the world of magic, your anchor was everything.
Stanley would know.
He had lost his to the portal years ago.
