Mabel swooped over the forest, laughing and spinning on her multicolored wings. The brunette girl let out a scream of joy, folding her wings and diving down above the trees. Her feathers flared open, and she let the wind carry her above the clouds.

Mabel hovered for a moment, watching a flock of birds fly below her. The angel smiled, than she allowed herself to drop. The air whistled past her ears, and Mabel could practically hear her brother scolding her.

The earth is dangerous for an angel, Mabel. You could get hurt, or captured. What if you meet a demon? Stan and Ford can't protect you forever, especially not from a demon! Mabel, use your head!

The angel unfolded her wings and scoffed. "I can do what I want! There's no way for me to get hurt all the way out here!"

There was a loud bang, and something ropey wrapped around Mabel's body. She yelped in surprise, and crashed into the ground just outside the tree line.

"Ouch!"

She tried to stand, but found that the net had bound her wings, arms, and legs. The weighted edges kept her pinned to the earth. A small group of people approached her. A man with bright yellow hair and an eye patch led them. He smirked.

"Men, bag her and bring her to the main camp. The buyer will be here soon, so be careful."

His lackeys saluted. "Yes, sir."

One of them lifted up a large metal bat, and with one good, solid strike to the head Mabel knew no more and lost it all to the darkness.

When she woke up, the sun was dipping low on the horizon. Mabel groaned softly and sat up. The angel suddenly realized that she was in a large metal cage, hands, feet, and wings bound with fraying rope.

The blond man from before was sitting in front of a fire, one that had no smoke and glowed blue. He stared into its depths, as if he were able to see something that nobody else could. The others were across from him, exchanging nervous glances and conversing in low voices.

Finally, the blond man looked up. "The buyer will be here soon. Michaels, Lewis, go wait by the front. If you see someone who you think is the buyer, make sure that he shows identification."

Two of the men saluted. "Yes, sir!"

They stood and moved over to the mouth of a trail that led away from the campsite. The one-eyed man snorted. "Don't disappoint me."

"Done gawking at Cipher and his minions?"

Mabel's head snapped around, and for the first time she noticed that there was somebody else in the cage.

The girl had short, blue hair and brown eyes. She wore all black, and it formed the tattered remains of what had once been a beautiful dark dress. Scaly sapphire wings were folded behind her, and as Mabel watched they opened and closed in an azure starburst.

The girl crossed her arms. "Do you stare at everything you see? Or is it just demons?"

Mabel blinked. "Huh?"
