Note that there are various versions of the myth.
The story begins when the god Eros (Greek equivalent of Cupid) curses Apollo, the god of prophecy and light, with a love arrow. Making the nymph Daphne, daughter of river god Peneus, the object of his infatuation for her extraordinary beauty. This made him pursue her, while Daphne was determined to evade his love and maintain her independency.
She desperately sought to escape, and just as he was about to reach her, she called upon her father or the earth goddess Gaea for rescue. Answering her plea, the turned her into a laurel tree, which is a symbol of desire for freedom and purity.
The laurel tree became sacred to Apollo, reminding him of his unrequited love and respect he held for Daphne.
Additional information:
• The name Defne is a the Turkish equivalent of Daphne
• This should be common knowledge, but just to clarify, Sumeru is based off Middle East and North Africa. Turkiye is a part of the Middle East, and you can find elements of it in the game as well (npc names, dishes, mercenary's attire, Academia's interior architecture which reminds the Blue Mosque,..)
