Every evening I walk to the beach to watch the sun say goodbye for the day. Summer sunsets are always my favorite to watch. So as usual, I found myself sitting at the shore watching the waves calmly roll in and out, listening to the low whooshing sound, almost as if the waves were inviting me to feel the cool water on my skin.

The beach was often empty during the evening, which I loved. Nothing better than to have the beach to yourself with the breeze dancing around you smelling like sea salt, while your mind drifts into such enchanting imaginary worlds. Places where happily ever afters were real, and true love existed. That's a world I want to live in. Unfortunately the only way to find a life where these things existed is to daydream. So that's exactly what I do.

I always find myself lost in my head, just dreaming of a place where I would be completely content, with nothing but joy overwhelming my heart. Which my life more than always lacked.

As the sky started to change from the glowing golden-orange light into the soft purple-blue night, I noticed ripples of movement in the water. What was that?

Being startled back to reality and out of my head, I stood up walking into the sea until it was ankle high. Hot as it was this evening the water was refreshing, so I found myself walking in deeper enjoying the cool water on my legs. It wasn't until I felt something swim past my legs that I remembered why I came to the water in the first place.

Ahh! I quickly ran out looking back as I safely got to the shore, and that's when I saw it, or rather him! I froze mesmerized. There was something obviously odd about him, he was very alluring.

His skin was pale and under the moonlight it gave him a silvery complexion, and his eyes were just as breathtaking. A deep blue that were warm and bright, like blue fire. His wet hair was mid-night black, well that's the color I imagine would describe it. It looked like it had a shade of sleek blue-purple to it.

He looked almost my age maybe a few years older. I didn't know what to do or say, and he just stared at me with his beautiful eyes. The expression on his face made him look intrigued yet at the same time very cautious, and he didn't give me the impression he was dangerous. So I finally snapped out of my trance and did the only thing I could think of I said, "Hi".

He responded slowly. "What's your name?"

"Uh...Milah. Where did you come from?" I started cautiously walking closer to the water, and that's when I saw a finned tail. Ahh! What the heck?

"What are you?!" I quickly stepped back to the shore feeling safer on land, and started to freak out.

"Please! Don't be afraid. My name is Rowan, and I am a Water Breather. Or as your people would name my kind, a Merman."

No way. I must have fallen asleep!

"What?" I barely managed a whisper.

"Every night I see you sitting there, and I'm...well just curious about your kind. I have never met a human before, we are forbidden and seeing you alone...I thought I finally had a chance to meet one without the danger of all your humans out at once."

"Uhh. Well...Umm.Wait! Mermaids are real?!"

"I prefer the term Water Breathers, and yes", he said with a chuckle.

Oh My. This can't be real. I was overwhelmed by excitement, curiosity, and confusion all at once. This could be just like one of my stories I constantly day-dreamed of. Choosing to give in to my curiosity I walked deeper into the ocean, waist high as he swam a little closer to me.

"Whoa", I let out in amazement as I saw his luminous tail. It was a blue-green, shimmering, scaled, tail that kind of had a glow to it.

"Would you like to touch it?", he smiled at my reaction.

"Sure." I said still staring at his tail. It was slimy, but still so amazing, it was proof that he was real. I was awestruck.

********

I know your all probably confused right now, since this has nothing to do with the prologue, but please bare with me it will all make sense at some point. And please give me feedback (hopefully not to harshly) it's my first time writing.
