"I didn't cheat!" Loki defends himself indignantly. "I was just using a little trick to---"

"To lose. You lost."

He holds out both his arms in challenge. "And yet, we're both wet and stinking of pond water."

"It's a stream, not a pond."

His green eyes roll, the summer sun setting them glittering. "Are you ever wrong?"

"Not usually. And there's a leech on your arm."

The Prince makes a rather ungentlemanly screeching sound as he bats it away, and Y/N's laughter brings the forest to life.

A tiny, glistening droplet of blood beads in its place on his wrist like a freckle.

It's unusual blood---for an Asgardian.

It's as blue as the sky.

Unbothered by it, Y/N is still cackling. She's bunched her dress up in both her hands like shopping bags and begun wading back towards the bank. "Not funny? Loki, you were airborne for almost a whole second! You must be the first-ever flying Giant!"

"Ha ha ha," he mutters, the round stones and muddy silt slick below his feet. Moodily, he wrings out his shirt and watches as it dribbles pond water pitifully onto his sodden shoes.

It exposes a flash of his pale, flat belly, and Y/N's cheeks heat.

When he gives the material another good twist between wide hands, it pulls the fabric tight to the curve of his back, and she blinks.

His shoulders are wider than she remembers---and bumpy with muscles she didn't know he had.

And he's gotten so tall.

When did he get so tall?

And those legs---

His wet trousers are clinging to thick, strong thighs and---

"What?" Loki asks, breaking her stupor.

"Hm?"

"What are you looking at? Your face has gone all...this." He gestures vaguely at Y/N's cheeks, probably two bright, circular blobs like a blush painted on a doll, and she clears her throat.

"Oh. Nothing. I was just thinking...it feels like yesterday we were just kids playing in water like this. Now you're all..." she gestures back at him; a nondescript wave of one hand.

"...I'm all...what?"

"I don't know," she shrugs. "All...grown up." Suddenly feeling warm, despite her sopping clothes, she awkwardly, averts her eyes to the murky water.

A tight-knit shoal of stickleback fry passes by her riding boots. They scatter as a hand enters her peripheral and, flushing more, she accepts it.

"Come on, you'll be getting cold."

Together, Loki and Y/N stumble, giggling weakly, to the bank. Moss grows thick around the fringes of the water, and they collapse onto it. The sun filters through the leaves overhead, warm on their sopping clothes.

"How are the horses?" Loki asks, concerned, and Y/N lets her head fall sideways on the mossy earth to regard them lazily.

They've lost interest in their rider's shenanigans and started busily munching at the nearby bushels in search of blackberries.

Y/N waves a hand. "Indifferent, as usual."

Loki's shoulders sag in relief. "Thank the gods Raven wasn't hurt."
