°ONOME MANUEL

While I walked into the compound, I knew my father was home. His security men were outside too. I walked into the house with uncertainty, Mum didn't inform me of this development, I wondered if she was in too. At this point, I regretted not going to give Pere the pills first. If my parents were home, there was no way they would let me leave, especially since it was already evening.

Upon entering the main building, I noticed one of my father's security guards and his PA. I breezed past them without saying anything, knowing Daddy would be in his study.
As soon as I got to the door, I gently knocked.

“Come in.” I heard him say and immediately pushed the door open.

“Daddy.” I greeted, and a sudden rush of excitement overtook me. We had not spoken much since the Racheal incident, and when he sent me double my usual pocket money, I knew he was trying to bribe me and apologize for yelling at me in that way. My father never yells at me, so to my greatest surprise he did so on that day, because of that girl, or maybe he was in a terrible mood. Because my father would never yell at me over a lowly maid.

He always said that we did not owe the servants any special treatment. They are paid to do their job, and they should be treated accordingly.

“Onome.” He said as soon as I got close to him and patted my head playfully.

“Mummy didn't tell me you both were coming home.” I said.
After pausing briefly and putting down his phone, he turned to face me.

“Your mother isn't home.” He responded.

“Oh.” I responded quite disappointed.

“Are we having dinner together?” I asked gleefully.

“No my dear. I have a flight by 7pm. I need to be in Abuja as soon as possible. I have an important meeting.” He responded. Meanwhile, the excitement in my eyes vanished.

Everything had changed recently; my parents were always busy, but they managed to make time for family dinners and events; however, these days, it was all different; either one of them was home and the other wasn't, and they never spent even a day.

These days, they did not show up well.

"My P.A transferred your allowance; did you receive it?" He asked.

"I sent you a thank-you note." I said referring to the one he sent double.

“I meant today.” He corrected.

"I have not seen it yet; I will check. Thank you Dad.” I said, meanwhile he gives me a gentle nod, at the same time he phone rings, I watched him excuse himself to go take the call.

Once he was out of sight, I sat down in one of his chairs, a little disappointed because a part of me missed my parents. At least the house was bearable with them around.
