It was a quiet evening, the golden sunlight bathing the park in a soft, nostalgic glow. Sakshi was sitting on a weathered wooden bench, nervously fidgeting with the strap of her bag. It had been years since she had last seen Aditya—years of growing up, of drifting apart, of wondering what could have been. Yet now, here she was, about to meet him again after all this time.
Her heart skipped a beat when she finally saw him. Dressed casually in a denim jacket and white t-shirt, his hair slightly messy from the breeze, Aditya looked the same and yet so different. More mature, perhaps. But his smile—oh, that same crooked smile that always melted her heart—was exactly as she remembered.
“Sakshi?” he called softly as he approached, his voice filled with equal parts hesitation and hope.
“Aditya,” she whispered, standing up. Her voice trembled slightly, and she immediately cursed herself for feeling so unsteady.
He paused for a moment, as though taking her in. “You…you haven’t changed at all,” he said, an amused but gentle look in his eyes.
Sakshi laughed nervously, brushing her hair back. “And you have,” she replied teasingly. “Look at you—so grown up now.”
He chuckled as he finally closed the distance between them. “Well, it has been a while.”
She nodded, suddenly feeling a lump form in her throat. “Yeah…a long while.”
They stood in silence for a moment, the world around them fading as they locked eyes. Everything unspoken—the hurt, the longing, the memories of the past—seemed to hang in the air between them.
Aditya finally broke the tension, gesturing toward the bench. “Should we sit?”
Sakshi nodded quickly. “Yes, of course.”
They sat down, the closeness of their shoulders making her heart race. Neither knew how to begin, how to pick up where they had left off so many years ago. But Sakshi couldn’t take it any longer; she had to say something.
“So…” she began, her fingers twisting in her lap. “Why now? Why did you want to meet after all this time?”
Aditya let out a slow breath, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. He glanced at her, his eyes filled with something raw, something vulnerable. “Because I couldn’t keep pretending anymore,” he admitted.
“Pretending?”
“That I don’t think about you. That I’ve moved on. Sakshi, I tried—I really tried. But no matter how many years passed, no matter how far apart we were…you were always there. In the back of my mind. In everything I did.” His voice broke slightly, and he turned to her fully. “I…I missed you.”
Sakshi’s chest tightened, tears pricking the corners of her eyes. She had been waiting to hear those words for so long, and now that she had, she didn’t know how to respond.
“I missed you too,” she confessed softly. “So much.”
Aditya’s gaze searched hers, as though trying to make sure she was being truthful. “Then why didn’t you say anything?” he asked gently.
“I thought…I thought you didn’t care,” she admitted, her voice trembling. “You stopped calling, stopped texting. I thought you’d forgotten about me.”
“I could never forget you,” he said fiercely, his hand reaching out to take hers. The warmth of his touch sent shivers down her spine. “I stopped because I thought you didn’t want me around anymore. I was an idiot, Sakshi. I should’ve fought harder for us.”
She shook her head quickly, her tears spilling over now. “No, it wasn’t just you. I…I should’ve tried too. I was scared, Aditya. Scared of how much I felt for you.”
