Chapter 29

Amanda's pov

Three weeks later

Everything went back to normal like the day in the closet didn't happen. We barely see each other but we sleep in the same bed. First I was avoiding him then he started going along with it. He is gone before I wake up and comes to bed late.

Even though we have this insufferable tension between us he still takes care of Nona. He checks in with her daily and the doctor comes often. I decided to get out of the house today, The house was getting kind of depressive.

Currently Reah and I are out to get brunch. She's filling me in on all the gossip happening at work.
" you okay?," she asks noticing I'm not paying much attention to what she was saying.

" yeah I'm good, sorry my head is kinda messed up right now, " I say taking a sip of water. " I feel bad for delaying us hanging out and now I'm here but I can barely focus,"

She takes my hand and holds it in between her two while looking in my eyes " You don't need to apologise, I fully understand. You have a lot on your plate."

I told her everything on why I couldn't come to work and Nona's condition. Leaving out the Daniel stuff, to everyone we are happily married and that's how it should remain until the contract ends.

" thank you for being so understanding and still wanting to be friends with me, " I say the last part jokingly.

She scoffs and continues to eat her food. We eat in a comfortable silence before her phone gets a notification.

" ooo girl I forgot to tell you that I met someone, " she says giggling

" tell me more, "

" His name is Miles and he works at a tech company, 6 feet tall, black and soooo handsome " 

Judging by her expression she is really into him.

" how did you guys meet? "

By the end of our date she told me that she met him at the grocery store and they just hit things off from there. From what I can tell she really likes him.

By the time I got home I felt better. Nona's condition has worsened despite all the treatments just like the doctor said it would. I go to her room after changing into comfortable clothes and lay next to her on bed.

To think that she won't be around one day really makes my heart ache. Her condition is getting worse, she barely talks and fully depends on the nurse now. Sometimes I feel selfish for wanting her to stay, I can see how much pain she is in. I drift off to sleep and wake up hours later.

Nona is still asleep and so I make my way to my room and take a shower before changing into my pajamas. As I'm getting into bed I see the door opening and look up to Daniel walking in. " Hey" he says as he walks to the closet.

I take out my laptop because I have to respond to a few emails before I go to bed. As my fingers move across the keyboard my mind is subconsciously too aware of his presence in the room. I hear him come out of the closet and into the washroom, followed by the sound of the shower turning on.

After a while he exits the bathroom. Even though I don't look up I assume he has a towel wrapped around him. The scent of his shower gel hits my nose as the scent diffuses into the air, he goes into the closet again before coming out a few minutes later.

He walks to the bed and I feel the mattress dip as he lays down. He scrolls through his phone for a while before speaking.

" Amanda " I hummed in response before looking up to met his amber eyes.

" I feel like a idiot asking this from you especially with everything going on but I just want you to keep in mind that you don't have to respond immediately and I would 100 percent understand if you don't want to ," he pauses.

I nod for him to continue." I'm listening ".

" you know I have that big event planned for the company, I have tried to delay it as much as I could but the investors are on my neck about it so I have to follow it through. " he sighs. " what in really trying to ask is if you will be able to accompany me to the event,"

He says all that while maintaining eye contact. To say that my body naturally reacts to him is an understatement. " I wouldn't mind going with you, I know how important the event is to you, " I responded.

I watch as his eyes lighten as if he was relieved to hear my reply. " You sure? " he asks for confirmation. I give him a small smile and nod.

" okay, thats good than," he says before referring his eyes to his phone. " Dominic and his girlfriend will be there too,"

"Okay, "

I look back at my laptop and sigh because I barely typed anything. I decide to put it away and lay down as I switch off the lamp on the side of my bed. " Goodnight" I whispered.

" Goodnight Bella" I hear him say so faintly before he switches off his lamp.
