THIS IS NOT EDITED! SORRY!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Liza P.O.V.

More barks rang out through the street, but I didn't hear them. I was frozen.

Howls joined Kane's as he stood protectively over Rosie's body. Each of them rang out the same message of longing, of death, of sorrow. His whole body shook as he voiced his lament, and the very sound of it brought more tears spilling over my cheeks.

Why?

I didn't even move as I heard scrabbling by my window, claws trying to get in. I just closed my eyes, and accepted my fate. Why should I survive, if Rosie didn't? Rosie, the eccentric girl that I had come to love, despite her being my worst enemy long ago. And now she was gone.

"Liza, get up." a familiar voice ordered, and I let my eyes flutter open. Wes was crouched down next to me, his hair matted and dirty. He had a ragged gash along his side, and it was seeping blood. Only a pair of threadbare shorts covered him.

"Why?" I heard myself ask, my voice breaking.

"Because not everyone can survive." he said slowly, his eyes filled with sorrow.

Those words only brought on another onslaught of sobs, and Wes pulled me closer to his chest, trying to comfort me. I wrapped my arms around his warm chest, but my fingers brushed against the blood trailing down his side, and I flinched away.

"You're hurt." I said hoarsely, looking down at my bloodied fingertips in horror.

"It's fine." he said, taking my hand and wiping it on his shorts. When he gave my hand back, it was clean, but I still remembered the feel of the warm, thick liquid on my skin. I shuddered to think how much blood had been spilt tonight.

He allowed me another minute to compose myself, but then he lifted up my chin and wiped my tears away with his thumb. The dirt on his hands left brown marks on my cheeks, but I didn't care.

"We have to go. More wolves will be attracted to the shots." he said, and he pulled me to my feet. He grabbed my gun and slung it across my body, and stuffed the boxes of ammunition into my pockets, while I stood numbly.

This can't be happening, my mind thought in panic, It's just a dream. I'll pinch myself, and then I'll wake up in my bed, ready to go to school. No more wars, no more werewolves - everything will just go back to normal.

A shaking hand lifted up, and I pinched myself hard in the arm. I felt the sharp pain, and then nothing. I opened my eyes.

This wasn't a dream.

"Come on." Wes urged, and I allowed myself to be propelled down the stairs. Outside, the street was quiet for the moment, but that could be broken in seconds. Wes unlocked the front door, and cautiously peered out.

"All clear." he whispered, and he walked out, me following close behind. I held my gun close to my side, and crept close to the wall. We waited there a moment, watching for any movement, but the street seemed deserted.

Wes tugged on my sleeve. "Let's go." he said, but I held back.

"What about Kane? We can't just leave him." I whispered, looking upwards to where I could hear his pitiful whimpers.

"The medics will have been attracted by his howls." Wes said quietly, "There's nothing we can do."

Nothing we can do.
