Liza P.O.V.
There you have it. Theory proved. Boys are mean, cruel, worthless things that have no place on this earth. Only trying to bring you down one way or another.
I tried to keep my thoughts going strong, but I could hardly keep myself from breaking down into tears. Why me? Why always stupid me. The one time you try to be a little confident, you get pushed down again. It just wasn't fair.
The second I had run into the classroom, I had found my favourite spot - at the back of the class, in the corner near the window. This was where I always sat last year. A sob caught in my throat as I realized that I had gotten no further than last year. I was stuck where I would always be.
The rest of the class filed in, and I avoided their eyes, not wanted to see their cruel stares. What had I done? It was like I was an outsider that didn't belong. I couldn't get the thought out of my head that something was extremely wrong here.
I took a deep breath to calm myself. It was just another school year. Just focus on the school, and in two years you'll be able to leave all these people behind. All I had to do was pay them no attention, and they would do likewise - like last year.
I reached over the back of my chair into my bag, and got out my folder of squared paper. I fished out my pencil case too, and soon I had everything ready on my desk - ready for work. I let out a forced laugh when I realized how sad this was. The first day back you didn't want to work after a whole summer of free time! You should be talking with your friends, talking about your summers and complaining about the new school year.
The teacher walked in, and I dragged my thoughts away from depressing topics. Concentrate, I told myself, you just have to think about happy things. You know how quickly you can change your mood.
So I focused on my shoes. Shoes made me happy - it was that simple. While the teacher was still getting ready, I examined my sandals and I felt my expression slowly soften. At least shoes had never let me down.
When the teacher finally called attention to the chatting class, I was feeling much better. Who cared about those mean people? I just had to be strong - get through each day one at a time - and I would be fine. I looked up at the front of the class with my eyes, hopefully, burning with confidence.
The teacher wacked her pointer against the blackboard.
"Welcome, class 11B, to a new school year. My name is Mrs. Clarke, and I will be taking no mischief in this class." Her muddy brown eyes scanned the class. "Here in extended math, I expect all work in on time, neat, and correct. If I recieve more than two pieces of work that are below a B, you will be moved down a class. I have no time for lazy workers. Understood?"
Suddenly, I wasn't feeling so confident anymore. The whole class nodded quickly, but I was too shocked to make any movement. I thought back to last year when I had math with Ms. Barrow. She had been so sweet, but she had won 40,000,000 in a lottery, so she had retired and moved closer to her grandchildren.
I was brought back to reality when Mrs. Clarke suddenly had her pointer sticking right in my face. She looked down at me with disgust, her frizzy white hair sitting up.
"Name!" She asked me, spit flying from her withered lips.
"Liza Macdonald." I stuttered.
"So, Macdonald," she sneered, "why did you not nod like the rest of the class? Did you not UNDERSTAND?" she screamed the last part, the shrill sound bouncing around the room.
