Secrets and lies

The letter lay on her pillow, the thick Manila envelope gave away its author before its contents were read. She had been waiting for this since she'd used that spell to spy on him in his study. Still Cassandra hesitated, even though she knew who the letter was from and that it had caused him many a sleepless night of late, but she wasn't sure she was ready to be privy to its contents or how, for that matter, they pertained to her.

Swallowing hard she strode the length of the room, snatched up the envelope and tore it open before she could change her mind. With trembling fingers she carefully unfolded the thick parchment paper and began to read.

Dear Cassandra
I am painfully aware that due to the nature of your service that you undoubtedly hate both myself and my family. For that I am sorry and can only hope now that it is precisely because of your humanity that you will see fit to granting me what I ask of you.

I recently received a terrible letter outlining my late wife's various indiscretions. Naturally, I do not wish for these accusations to become public as I fear they will impact negatively upon my children, both of whom have become more unpredictable and impulsive since their mothers passing.

So, what does this have to do with you? The gentleman who sent this letter to me is known to many for his less than angelic persona. I need to meet with him to settle my own mind, however, I am also more than aware of this man's underhanded nature. I fear that I may not make it out of this situation unscathed. I ask that you, Cassandra, protect my children from this heinous lie regarding their precious mother. I ask that you keep both my meeting and its reason secret from them.

I have informed them that I have to go away on council business for a few days. If I do not return, shelter my babies. Do not let this crush them, as it is doing me.

Cassandra lay down the letter with trembling hands. For all intents and purposes Tobias was willingly walking to his death. A smile spread slowly across her face.
