Letters of Life

Cassandra paced the floor of her bedroom, still in disbelief. The letter had arrived that morning, and she had not been ready for its contents. Cal had barely left his room for a week. Moping no doubt over that human girl. Every since she had walked out he had been sullen and stroppy, ignoring both Selena and Marcus when they tried to speak to him. Cassie could see that he had actually fallen for her and was hurting, this would tip him over the edge. Snatching up the letter she read it again, as if the contents may have changed since the first four readings.

Dear Cassandra,

I came out here to dispel the rumours and lies that this man is spreading about my family. Only now I find that these are not baseless rumours but, in fact, are real events which can be and have been proven to me.

Forgive me, let me explain. Shortly after we were married my wife was called away to attend the funeral of a family member. What I did not know was that whilst she was away my wife had already broken our wedding vows. I shall refrain from naming the scum with which she did this as, just writing his name causes me pain.

A few weeks after she returned we found out she was expecting. I was ecstatic, overjoyed that we had finally been blessed with a baby. I couldn't have been happier. It was all a lie. Selena was born and I was smitten, infatuated with his beautiful infant. Little did I know I was only playing father. Deula, unbeknownst to me, was in contact with the real father, sending him pictures and information. She never broke contact with him, even after Cal was born. He, I know for sure, is mine.

My wife cheated, became pregnant by another and had his baby, let me believe I was a father. However, the real shame lies deeper still, that the man with which she ruined everything was not a vampire but a mere human.

I cannot carry this burden, this shame. The elders and our whole community will judge me when this comes to light, and come to light it will, that is inevitable. I know that I am leaving Cal behind but do not think me weak. With me around he will be constantly reminded of his whore mother's indiscretions, and people will not let him forget it. With me gone the scandal will die down and he will be free to live a normal life.

Please, tell Cal that I love him and I am sorry. To you, I apologise for your families enslavement but I ask that you continue to serve our family name. Look after Cal, he will need you now more than ever.

Thank you Cassandra, and goodbye.

Yours Faithfully

Tobias Lucien

Cassandra's mind was buzzing with unanswered questions. All this new information, that Tobias was now undoubtedly dead; that Selena was the product of a human/vampire relationship; it was buzzing around in her head at dizzying speed. To Cassandra, Tobias had always been a stoic man, one who seemed unemotional and detached. To hear him now, say goodbye, before committing suicide was something she couldn't fathom. This would blow the entire family apart, and that thought, well that thought made her smile.
