One Step Closer

Cassandra let herself into Tobias' study, she had some research to do. If she was right she would only have to wait and one more of her problems would be solved. She scanned the dusty tomes that lined to the shelves. The book she was looking for was a leather clad font of information, gilded with precision and detail, depicting fierce looking vampires and cowering victims. Upon finding it she heaved it down and took a seat at Tobias' ornate desk; impertinent but now completely unpunishable, by Tobias at least.

She leafed through the ancient pages that were yellowing with age. Each as stiff and brittle as the last. Finally, she found what she was looking for. Cassandra absorbed the information greedily, a self satisfied smile spreading across her face. She knew it.

"Come in," Selena said, her voice breaking slightly. She'd never felt so ill, and it was getting worse.

Cassandra entered and smiled sweetly at her, "How are you feeling?"

"Awful. The symptoms I told you about are getting worse," she gritted out as pain stabbed her stomach. Her hair was matted to her face and sweat rolled down her neck, where a flush unlike she'd ever seen before had settle at her throat. Cassandra merely nodded. "You know what this is, don't you?" Selena said, suddenly sensing a shift in Cassandra's manner. Again she just nodded. Selena joined in the action as if it would help her understand. "Tell me," she begged.

Cassandra told her everything she knew, the girl sat and listened her face paling even more with every word.

"I don't understand," Selena cried, and Cassandra laughed, a harsh, bitter laugh. Selena rose from her seat intending to rush at her. Only her body failed her and she fell back into the chair she'd just vacated. Selena began to sob and Cassandra watched, watched as this powerful woman crumbled before her very eyes.

"Hais te leygon," Cassandra whispered, she placed the steak she had conjured onto the dresser next to Selena. "Just something to think about," she said plainly and left.

Hampered only slightly by the green foliage that had sprouted in the summer days, Marcus made his way through the trees. The doors to the manor were once again closed, the teens long since gone and surprisingly had not returned. Though Marcus thought Cassandra had something to do with that when she had altered rooms 4s spell.

"You took your time," a sullen voice said from the shadows.

"Hey to you too," Marcus replied brightly.

Elliana came into the light. Her pale skin seemed to luminesce, her slightly parted lips framed her fangs giving the illusion that she was panting. Marcus smiled and held up his right hand. From it, dangling precariously, was a dead rabbit, it's neck at an odd angle, it's eyes glassy and staring.

Elliana's eyes fell from green to black, her fangs fully exposed, the skin around her eyes darkening. Marcus laughed and tossed the carcass towards her, it's lifeless body twisted grotesquely in the air before being snatched by Elliana's hand. She sank her fangs into the torso, sucking and slurping greedily. It didn't take her long to drain the animal.

"More," she said to Marcus as she backhanded her mouth, removing the remnants of blood.

"Not today," Marcus told her.

"What? Why?" she wailed her eyes blazing now, "I'm hungry!"

Marcus chuckled but that only seemed to enrage her further. He let the smile fall from his lips, though her behaviour still amused him; seeing an essentially grown woman acting like a petulant child. "I know, but for the time being you're bound here," Marcus explained. "It's still to dangerous for you out there."

"Why?" the wail was gone but the sulkiness remained.

"As a fledgling you still can't control your hunger, or your new found powers. You could do something stupid, get caught or get dead even." Marcus told her.

Elliana slumped back onto the bed and Marcus sat down next to her. "He doesn't visit anymore," she said quietly.

"I know, he's changed" Marcus nodded. "He's a prick, doesn't know what he's missing though." Elliana looked up into his eyes and electricity fizzled between them. Slowly, Marcus moved closer and their lips touched. Cal was a jerk he thought vaguely as they succumbed to a basic carnal desire.
