Selena sighed heavily, her stupid baby brother was yet again going to mess things up for them with his arrogant behaviour. She knew all about the dilapidated house in the woods, about the women he and Marcus kept there, what they did no longer under the cover of darkness. Cassandra had happily told her everything when she asked, her little brother seemed to forget she was not just his personal slave. Though now Selena had a hard choice to make, confront Cal or tell their father.
Tobias was not a warm man, his dead heart had hardened even more when their mother, his precious wife had died a few years earlier. In fact, they'd all changed for the worse. Gone was Cal's chilled demeanor, he was more volatile and rash than he'd ever been before and she herself was more guarded, unforgiving even.
Most of the human population are blissfully ignorant to the fact that vampires live, work and walk among them, but a handful are born with the ability to recognise vampires and resist their compulsion. These people are drawn to each other and centuries ago forged a band of brothers called the VHL, Vampire Hunters League. These hunters made it their life's mission to exterminate their race from the earth; they had a school, so heavily guarded that no vampire had ever even got close enough to take it down, where they trained new hunters from a very early age. It was one of these hunters who had happened upon Delua whilst she had been out. Vampires are born with the ability to conceal their minds, and give off an aura that identifies them as human. Only when a vampire wants to reveal themselves to a human will they be able to see their true form. Delua and Tobias had been arguing that day, a fairly nasty argument by all accounts and Delua had stormed out. She had failed to conceal her mind fully, had failed to take the necessary precautions all vampires took whilst out during daylight hours. Tobias had taken off on a hunt to try and temper his anger. A hunter had caught Delua's scent. He followed her home, managed to overpower her then thrust a stake straight through her heart. The hunter, callously, left her pinned to the wall by the stake, a message to all other vampires in the house. It had been Cal who had found her. Bored and being the rebellious 'teen' he was, he had bunked off school and come home early, found his mother brutalised. They had all sworn revenge that day, revenge on the VHL and their families. Revenge that so far had been far from sweet.
Telling their father would only cause him more pain and suffering and Selena didn't want to bring more hurt to their family, they had suffered enough. She decided to keep Cal's indiscretions to herself, at least for a little while longer.
Cal and Marcus made their way slowly back to Mast, laughing and joking, enjoying the freedom night afforded them. Cassandra stood awaiting their arrival as she'd been instructed.
"They are all in their rooms," she told him as they passed her into the entrance hall.
"Bring down number 1," Marcus told her "I fancy a fiery red head." Cassandra nodded then looked expectantly at Cal.
"Bring me the other three, I have a wicked idea."
Marcus raised his eyebrows at Cal clearly intrigued. Cassandra however, merely turned and vanished up the stairs. Cal sauntered into the old dining room and Marcus trailed behind, eager to see what his best mate had in mind.
Cal cleared the room of all the rubbish it held in the time it took to blink. The ancient dust covered, varnish peeling, three legged table was hauled into the servants' corridor, swiftly followed by a warped dresser missing a door, several seat-less chairs and one half burnt settee, leaving behind a few sad looking chairs and one tattered curtain.
"What are you up to?" Marcus asked.
"You'll see."
Moments later Cassandra appeared at the door with four girls. All four were dirty and disheveled, dried blood caked their skin and each wore an identical black slip dress.
