"A final caution," the examiner continued, his voice serious, making everyone listen intently. "If you are short on luck or ability, you could very well end up seriously injured or even dead."
"Doesn't everyone know that?" [Name] muttered under their breath, rolling their eyes. It's the person's choice if they decide to take the Hunter Exam without thinking about it. [Name] couldn't believe the obvious warning had to be said out loud. It wasn't anyone's fault but their own if they weren't prepared. Plus, everyone knew that there is a possibility of dying during the Exam. No one should not be surprised by this.
Kurapika glanced at the examiner before whispering, "He might be asking if anyone wants to drop out now." [Name] nodded in understanding, realizing it made sense. The warning was more of a formality, and it made sense he wanted to give some people who might have cold feet the chance to drop out now. Although, it will be hard to tell if he would do this every time the group ends up finishing a test of some sort. They doubt the examiners are willing for anyone to drop out during the test.
Leorio, who was still looking ahead, scoffed softly. "I doubt anyone is going to drop out now, right when the exam's about to start." It was true. The tension was thick in the air, and no one was going to back down now. They were all in, whether they realized it or not. [Name] wonder if they will see anyone die right at the beginning of the exam. Anyone who does end up kicking the can really are weak in their opinion.
The examiner thrust his arm out toward the elevator. "Those who accept the risks, please follow me," he called. "Otherwise, please exit via the elevator behind you."
There was a moment of silence. No one moved. No one spoke. Everyone understood exactly what he meant.
"Very well," the examiner declared, breaking the quiet, "All 405 applicants will participate in Phase One."
[Name] raised an eyebrow at the mention of "Phase One." Phase One? they thought, a sense of curiosity and caution washing over them. It sounded like there were more stages to this first test than anyone expected. It made sense though—this wasn't just going to be a simple challenge.
The examiner turned around, walking with stiff, large strides like a toy soldier. Honestly made them confused why he was running like that, but they didn't bother asking. It wasn't really their business to ask why.
Although, [Name] couldn't shake the feeling that Phase One wasn't going to be as simple as everyone might have hoped. The group followed behind him, keeping pace as the air around them grew heavier with anticipation.
"Of course, no one turned around and left," Leorio muttered, looking around at the group. "I'd hoped a few might withdraw."
"Maybe you should've," [Name] quipped with a mischievous smile, clearly enjoying teasing him. "Don't wanna end up injuring yourself, ya know."
Leorio's eyes narrowed, and he immediately glared at [Name]. "You brat! Kids like you should've turned back instead!"
[Name] patted their legs, smirking. "I am pretty young, after all. I bet you would get leg cramps, old man."
Leorio's face turned bright red with anger. "Y-You!" he stammered, flustered, which made [Name] laugh out loud. Kurapika sighed, rubbing his temple in frustration, while Gon watched the exchange, clearly finding the whole interaction amusing.
[Name] decided to let Leorio off the hook for now as they kept a steady pace with the others. It seemed like the group would be walking it to the second phase. They crossed their arms behind their head, a smug look on their face. "This is too easy," they mumbled, as if to themselves. Way too easy in their opinion, but they didn't want to rain on anyone's parade.
