"How long do we have to keep walking?" [Name] whined, leaning against Gon for support. He didn't seem to mind at all. Instead of walking through the pitch-black tunnel, they were now trudging through a dark forest. [Name]'s feet hurt so much that they just wanted to cry. The urge to summon their Divine Dogs was strong, but they didn't want to make it worse by being low on nen.
"Honestly, yeah," Leorio agreed, dragging his feet and slouching. [Name] noticed Gon and Kurapika seemed completely fine, which made their eye twitch in frustration. Is this a sign we need to work out more? They weren't tired, but they definitely didn't want to keep walking. They were getting bored.
"The hag lied," [Name] grumbled, leaning further into Gon's back, who was still unfazed by the complaining.
Leorio groaned, ruffling his hair in frustration. "It's totally dark out! 'Walk for two hours,' she said. It was two hours two hours ago!" He scoffed, but then his eyes widened as he saw something familiar. He pointed at the sign in front of them like it had personally offended him. "Another 'Beware of Magical Beasts' sign? Are we ever going to make it to the exam site? I'm hungry! I need to take a dump!"
Gon looked over his head, and [Name] could feel his hair tickling their face. "Come on, Leorio! We'll leave you behind," Gon teased, pulling his bottom eyelid down to mock the older man. [Name] felt their cheeks puff up as they almost burst out laughing.
"Yeah, Gon's right!" [Name] cackled behind their hand. "I mean, you're old and everything, so I guess it's understandable."
Gon tilted his head, eyes lighting up in understanding. "That is true, [Name]."
"You brats!" Leorio screeched, his eyes burning with anger.
"Don't break a hip, grandpa," [Name] teased, watching Leorio raise his fist and shake it angrily.
"You are so getting it, you rat!" Leorio shouted, outraged, his face turning red. Kurapika sighed, placing a hand on his temple in frustration at the childish display. It seemed like he was going to have to be the responsible one.
"If you guys stop fighting, you'd notice the cabin," Kurapika cut in, trying to stop Leorio from blowing a gasket. [Name] sighed in relief, hoping they could finally sit down and eat something.
"Let's go, guys," [Name] muttered as the group approached the cabin. They prayed this was the right place for the next part of the exam. Stepping onto the open-air porch, Leorio, being the oldest, knocked on the door.
"Hey! Hello? Anyone home?" Leorio called out, but all that answered was silence, causing him to sigh.
"I say we break in," [Name] offered, earning exasperated looks from Leorio and Kurapika while Gon laughed. They threw their arms in the air dramatically. "Better than sleeping out here!"
"I love camping outside, especially when it's fun with others!" Gon said, his face beaming. [Name]'s eye twitched at his sunny response.
"They're probably out," Leorio mumbled, looking thoughtful. "We're coming in!"
"That would be a crime," [Name] pointed out, snickering as they rubbed their hands together with a mischievous grin. "Let's do it. I've always wanted to be a criminal."
Kurapika slapped his palm to his forehead. "What is wrong with you?"
"A lot of things," [Name] replied without missing a beat. "Trauma does that to you."
Kurapika paused. "You might be right."
[Name] waved it off with a casual gesture. "I'm always right."
Kurapika scoffed.
Leorio ignored the conversation between the two and opened the door. [Name] couldn't help but think this felt like something straight out of a horror story. As they stepped inside, they took in the sight of the interior of the house. Broken glass shards and scattered furniture covered the floor. Bricks and debris lay everywhere. Then, they noticed the man bleeding out on the floor, and standing over him was a strange, yellowish, furry monster.
