The palace corridors stretched long and quiet as Qing Yi made his way from the Apothecary Study, the soft echo of his footsteps filling the marble hall. Morning sunlight filtered through the lattice windows, painting intricate patterns on the polished floors.
Servants and guards bowed deeply as he passed, their murmured greetings of "Your Grace" blending into the air. Qing Yi acknowledged them with a slight nod, his mind already focused on the task ahead.
His destination was the King's study, a room that Kai Ze had chosen deliberately—far removed from the late King's oppressive chambers, a symbol of a fresh start for the Kingdom of Khufu.
As Qing Yi approached the grand double doors, the palace herald stationed outside stepped forward, inclining his head respectfully before opening the door just enough to enter.
"The Grand Duke, Your Majesty." He announced.
From within, Kai Ze's calm, authoritative tone responded, "Let him in."
The doors opened soundlessly, and Qing Yi entered the study. His robes, dark emerald with fine golden embroidery along the edges, swayed softly with each step, the fabric catching the sunlight streaming through tall arched windows. The study itself exuded practicality and quiet dignity. High bookshelves lined the walls, filled with tomes on military strategy, governance, and the long history of Khufu. At the center of the room stood a wide table, its surface scattered with maps and scrolls illuminated by the golden light of morning.
Kai Ze stood at the table, his posture commanding but relaxed. His royal robes were a striking combination of black and gold. The sleek, tailored design conveyed both authority and sophistication, with intricate embroidery along the edges that evoked the shifting sands of the desert. A finely woven gold sash secured the garment at his waist, completing the ensemble with understated elegance. His dark, steady gaze shifted to Qing Yi, softening slightly as he inclined his head in acknowledgment.
Standing to Kai Ze's sides were Lord Wu Xing, the Royal Advisor, and General Wu Jin, the Master of War. Both men turned as Qing Yi entered, bowing their heads deeply.
"Your Grace," they said in unison, their voices respectful but firm.
Qing Yi returned their greeting with a slight bow before shifting his gaze to Kai Ze. His expression was warm but composed as he addressed the King. "Your Majesty."
Kai Ze nodded in return, his gaze briefly searching Qing Yi's face. "Are you well?" he asked, his voice carrying a blend of concern and authority. "You left the coronation banquet rather abruptly last night."
A faint smile touched Qing Yi's lips, his posture relaxed. "Thank you for your concern, Your Majesty. I'm fine now."
Kai Ze studied him briefly, as though searching for any hidden signs of discomfort, before nodding in acceptance. "Good. I'm glad to hear it."
The King turned his attention back to the table, his gaze settling on General Wu Jin.
"We were just discussing the next steps for the military," he explained to Qing Yi, his voice regaining its formal cadence. "General Wu Jin is set to return to the military training camp to reorganize the troops."
General Wu Jin nodded, his voice steady as he spoke. "The men will need to be properly equipped and prepared for the new era under Your Majesty's rule. Reorganizing the chain of command and strengthening the troops' morale is a priority."
Lord Wu Xing stepped forward slightly, his expression thoughtful. "It would also be wise for Your Majesty to visit the camp personally. Your presence alone would remind the troops of your dedication to them and the kingdom. It would boost their morale significantly."
