The vent was unbearably cramped, the metal pressing against their palms and knees as Jules, Dustin, and Erica crawled forward in the dim light. Every shift in movement sent an echoing creak through the air, making Jules' pulse quicken. The air inside was thick with dust, clogging her throat with every breath, and there was an unmistakable, acrid chemical smell that made her stomach churn.
They had been crawling for what felt like forever when Dustin, leading the way, finally reached a vent cover. He paused, peering through the slats before carefully pushing it open. With a quiet grunt, he slipped through first, landing with a soft thud on the floor below. Erica followed, her movements light and quick. Jules was last, bracing herself against the cool metal before lowering herself down.
As soon as her feet hit the ground, she instinctively scanned the room. The dim glow of fluorescent lights flickered above them, casting eerie shadows across the walls lined with glass containers. Inside the containers, thick green liquid pulsed slightly, like something alive. The sight made her uneasy.
"Jackpot," Dustin whispered, his voice filled with excitement.
Jules, however, wasn't convinced. Her brow furrowed as she slowly stepped forward, taking in the ominous contents of the room. "This is dangerous," she muttered, her gaze fixed on the glowing substances. "We don't know what this stuff is."
Dustin wasn't listening. His attention had already shifted across the room. His eyes lit up as he spotted something against the far wall-a sleek, black utility cart.
"Oh, hell yes," he whispered under his breath before darting toward it.
Jules and Erica exchanged a look before following after him, albeit with far less enthusiasm.
"Do you even know how to drive?" Erica asked, raising an eyebrow as Dustin practically threw himself into the driver's seat.
Dustin waved her off with a confident grin. "How hard can it be? Max did it." He gripped the wheel dramatically, pretending to rev an engine that wasn't even on yet.
Jules rolled her eyes, already done with his antics. Without hesitation, she marched over and grabbed him by the arm, effortlessly shoving him out of the seat and into the passenger side.
"Move," she ordered, sliding into the driver's seat with ease. "I actually have my permit. JD took me to get it a few weeks ago."
Dustin groaned, dramatically flopping against the seat. "Please, just let me drive it! Just this once!"
