The Slytherin common room had been transformed for the evening, its usual dark and moody atmosphere softened slightly by the flickering candlelight illuminating the large open space. The long green couches had been pushed to the sides, creating a makeshift ballroom in the center of the room. The gathered Slytherins, from fourth-years to seventh-years, stood around in small clusters, chatting amongst themselves as they waited for whatever important announcement had warranted them all being summoned.

At the front of the room, standing with his arms crossed and an expression that could freeze fire, was none other than Professor Snape. The moment he cleared his throat, the low hum of conversation ceased, and all eyes turned to him.

"As you are all aware," Snape began, his voice as smooth and cold as ever, "the Yule Ball is approaching."

A few students exchanged excited glances, while others looked confused.

Snape's dark eyes scanned the room as he continued, "It is a tradition that accompanies the Triwizard Tournament, and as such, it is expected that all fourth-years and above will attend. For those of you who have somehow managed to remain ignorant, the ball is an evening of formal dancing and decorum—" he sneered the word slightly, as if doubting they had any. "—and I do not wish for any of you to make complete fools of yourselves in front of the rest of the school."

Carina, standing between Theo and Blaise, leaned slightly toward them and whispered, "That was directed at Draco, wasn't it?"

Theo snorted. "Without a doubt."

Draco turned his head slightly and scowled. "I heard that."

Snape's glare silenced them instantly.

"Since I highly doubt many of you are capable of performing even the most basic of waltzes without embarrassing yourselves, I will be providing a demonstration," Snape drawled. Then, to Carina's horror, he added, "Black, come here."

Carina's eyes widened. "What?"

"You heard me."

She groaned. "Oh, come on, there are so many other—"

"Unless, of course," Snape cut her off, his expression darkening, "you would prefer to spend your next two weeks in detention?"

Carina let out an exaggerated sigh before dragging her feet toward him. "Fine, fine," she muttered, standing before him. She shot him a mischievous smirk. "Just try not to step on my toes, Uncle Sev."

Snape looked like he regretted every life decision that had brought him to this moment.

A few students stifled laughter, while others simply looked on in shock at the sheer absurdity of what was about to happen.
