The cozy Lupin cottage was alive with warmth and laughter that evening. The fire in the hearth crackled softly, casting a golden glow over the living room. Carina sat cross-legged on the rug, grinning mischievously as she watched Sirius glare down at the Wizard's Chessboard in front of him, his brow furrowed in concentration. Remus lounged on the sofa nearby, a steaming cup of tea in hand, observing the scene with mild amusement.
"Are you sure this game isn't cursed?" Sirius asked suspiciously, narrowing his eyes at his defeated bishop, which was currently sulking off the board after being obliterated by Carina's knight.
Carina let out a laugh, her emerald-green eyes gleaming with mischief. "It's not cursed, Sirius. You're just really, really bad at it."
Sirius shot her an exaggeratedly wounded look. "I'll have you know I was undefeated in chess during my Hogwarts years."
"Sure, if by undefeated you mean you never played," Remus said with a smirk, setting his tea down. "You used to charm the pieces to move on their own when James wasn't paying attention."
Sirius threw up his hands in mock outrage. "That was strategy, Moony! Strategic misdirection."
Carina snorted, covering her mouth with her hand. "Yeah, well, your 'strategy' isn't helping you now. Checkmate." She tapped her queen into position with a flourish, and the opposing king threw down its tiny sword in defeat.
Sirius stared at the board in horror before slumping dramatically back in his chair. "This is rigged. My own daughter is conspiring against me."
Carina laughed, leaning back on her hands. "Don't blame me for being better than you. It's genetics—clearly, I got all my brains from Mum."
Remus chuckled softly, shaking his head. "I don't know if that's a compliment to Sirius or an insult."
Sirius crossed his arms, pouting in a way that made Carina laugh even harder. "Fine, then," he said, sitting up suddenly with a glint in his eye. "If you're so brilliant, let's see how you do with this." He reached into the side table drawer and pulled out a deck of Muggle playing cards.
Carina raised an eyebrow. "Muggle cards? What's the catch?"
"No catch," Sirius said innocently, shuffling the deck with surprising dexterity. "I'll teach you an old card game James and I used to play with Lily during those rare moments she liked hanging out with us."
Remus smirked. "You mean when Lily managed to tolerate you."
Sirius ignored him and waved Carina over to the table. "Come on, kid, I promise this one doesn't involve cursed chess pieces or magical explosions. It's called 'Cheat.' Simple rules: lie your way to victory."
