The fog hung low over the old town, creeping between the crooked alleyways and winding streets like a living thing. The air was thick, damp with moisture, and the dim streetlights flickered in a rhythm that made it hard to tell whether they were malfunctioning—or if they were trying to warn them.
Y/N pulled her coat tighter around her, the fabric soft but cold against her skin. Her breath came out in puffs of vapor, dissolving almost instantly into the night. She had been walking these streets for what felt like hours, lost. The town wasn't new to her, but the eerie feeling that pressed against her chest was. Something wasn't right.
She turned a corner and found herself standing in front of an old, abandoned building. Its windows were shattered, and ivy crept up its decaying brick walls. The door was slightly ajar, inviting her inside, but every instinct screamed at her to turn away. But she couldn't. Not yet. She had to know.
Before she could make a decision, a soft voice interrupted her thoughts.
"You look like you're trying to run away from something."
Y/N froze. The voice had come from the shadows, a place where no one had been standing moments ago.
She whipped around, heart pounding, but all she could make out was a silhouette—a tall figure, barely visible in the dim light. Her pulse raced as she tried to steady her breath.
"Who's there?" Her voice barely made it past her lips, hoarse with fear.
A figure stepped forward, emerging from the fog like a ghost. He was tall, with a calm, almost serene expression that made her uneasy despite the peacefulness it tried to convey. His pale face was framed by dark, messy hair, his eyes sharp yet calm, studying her.
"I was wondering when you'd notice me," he said, his voice smooth, like someone who knew how to make a stranger feel both seen and invisible at the same time.
Y/N narrowed her eyes. "Who are you?"
"Jeonghan," he said simply, tilting his head slightly as if amused by her confusion. "You've been walking for a while. Lost, I assume?"
Y/N took a step back. "I'm not lost. I'm just..." She hesitated. Was she lost? Or was she searching for something she couldn't explain? "Never mind. What are you doing here?"
Jeonghan didn't answer right away. Instead, he glanced at the building behind her, his eyes narrowing slightly. "I was wondering the same thing about you. Why are you here?"
Y/N glanced over her shoulder at the abandoned structure. It was a place she'd heard about from rumors—whispers of strange disappearances and a history too dark to talk about. But she hadn't believed it. Not until tonight. "I'm looking for something," she admitted quietly. "Something... I can't explain."
Jeonghan's gaze softened as he looked at her, his eyes searching hers as if reading a story that wasn't written in any book. "There are things here that people don't understand," he said, his voice low, almost a whisper, like he was afraid of waking something up. "You're not supposed to be here. None of us are."
Y/N shivered, suddenly realizing that the fog had grown thicker around them, the world around them growing quieter, like the night itself was holding its breath.
"Why are you here then?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady. "If it's so dangerous, why—"
"Because it calls to me," Jeonghan interrupted, his gaze distant now, as if he was seeing something she couldn't. "Just like it calls to you. There's something pulling us here, something we can't resist."
The air felt colder, and a chill swept through Y/N's body. She hadn't been imagining it. There was something in the building. She could feel it now—an energy in the air, heavy and dark. Something about this place didn't just feel abandoned. It felt alive. And not in the way a living thing should.
"Listen," Jeonghan continued, his voice more urgent now. "You need to leave. You should have never come here. If you stay, you might not leave at all."
Y/N's feet were already moving toward the open door of the building, almost as if something had taken control of her body. "I need to know," she murmured, her voice barely audible. "I need to find out what happened."
Jeonghan's eyes darkened as he stepped forward, reaching out to grab her wrist, his grip surprisingly strong. "Don't do this," he warned, his face twisted in a mix of concern and something darker, something she couldn't place. "I've seen what's inside. It's not worth it."
But Y/N pulled her arm away from his grasp, heart hammering in her chest. She couldn't turn back now. The curiosity gnawed at her, urging her to step further into the darkness.
"I have to," she said, her voice trembling with determination.
Jeonghan hesitated for a moment before sighing deeply. "Then I can't stop you," he said quietly. "But you need to understand one thing."
Y/N turned back to look at him.
"If you go in there," he said, his voice thick with warning, "you won't just find answers. You'll find the truth. And the truth... isn't always something you can escape."
Y/N swallowed hard, her pulse quickening as she stepped toward the door, crossing the threshold into the darkened building. The moment her foot crossed the entrance, the temperature dropped. The air thickened, suffocating her. And then, the door slammed shut behind her.
In the darkness, she could hear the faintest whisper of a voice, not from Jeonghan—but from somewhere deep within the building.
Welcome home.
Y/N's heart skipped a beat, but before she could react, the shadows around her shifted, swirling, and Jeonghan's voice echoed from outside. "I warned you!"
But it was too late. She was already lost.
The building consumed her, and the fog outside thickened, hiding her from the world.
Jeonghan stood outside, his face expressionless, but the flicker of guilt in his eyes betrayed him. He had tried to stop her. But the truth was—he had been here once too. And like Y/N, he had never truly left. The truth had claimed him long ago.
And now, it was her turn.
