(A/N: Probably gonna be a one-off chapter, we're starting production at Uni so I'm gonna be even busier aaaaaa. Also extra thing! I've partially re-written Chapter 1 to improve it's quality + partially appeal to the characterisation the recruiter showed in Season 2)
Jung-bae gazed longingly up at the cash in the piggybank, eyes glittering with the golden sheen cast into them.
Gi-hun studied the man with a frown, as if irritated that his attention was fixated so easily.
The man's eyes veered to the side, landing on Young-il, who self-consciously touched the blue 'O' patch on his chest.
He cleared his throat before speaking up. "Oh, don't worry. I also wanna stop here. I wanna get out, go to the hospital, and be with my wife."
Dae-eun's eyes flicked to the back of the older man's head, as if doing so would let her peel open his skull to glimpse his memories.
How much of what you've told us is true?
Gi-hun nodded nonchalantly, working his jaw, once again ignoring or being completely oblivious to Dae-eun's analytical expression.
Not that she minded at this point, Gi-hun really half-assed his plan from the start, barely a toe in the doorway to success and he was sinking faster than the Titanic.
Dae-ho spoke up, interrupting Dae-eun's thought pattern of interconnecting metaphors.
"This time, we'll get out of this place. Knowing when it's time to retreat is essential to being a good marine. Right sir?"
Jung-bae blinked as he was patted on the shoulder, as if startled from a trance.
"Uh- yeah, yeah. Of course, yeah." He cleared his throat, looking Dae-ho up and down.
"We need to end the games here, by any means possible. I swear I'll help you, all of you, once we're out of this place. And all I want in return is to have your support during the vote." Gi-hun spoke clearly, as if his voice could be a rallying cry.
Or a desperate grasp for help.
Dae-eun made no such promise to go along with him, after all, their agendas didn't align still.
Jin-sun could still be here, and if he was, Dae-eun was gonna find him.
"All right. Here we go. Let's say 'Victory' on the count of three." Dae-ho thrusted out a hand, prompting the others to put theirs in.
Just to save face, the white-haired girl joined the crowd.
"On three. One, two, three!"
"Victory!" They cheered.
...
"Unlike last time, we will begin voting with Player 001. Player 001, please cast your vote." The manager called.
Dae-eun cast a glance at Young-il as the man stepped out of the crowd.
The soft pad of his sneakers across the smooth floor echoed around the silent room as he headed up towards the console to cast his vote.
He regarded the manager and the soldiers for a few seconds before hitting the red 'X'.
1 against, 0 in favour.
With a swift 'rrrrrip', he tore off and handed over the blue 'O' and accepted a red 'X', pinning it to his chest.
"Player 006."
An older woman with hair slick with sweat approached the console and hit 'X' with only a few seconds of hesitation.
No change in vote.
"Player 007."
The young man with the elderly mother pushed through the crowd, though Dae-eun heard a very brief conversation as the woman held him back.
Something about 'not doing anything stupid'.
Right. He was tempted to stay last time, only reason he pressed 'X' was his mother backseating.
The man stood with his hand hovered over the 'X' before glancing up at the screen.
2 against, 0 in favour.
His hand swung over to hit 'O'.
Dae-eun tightened her lips, though, it was an expected outcome.
The votes so far had been shockingly close, one person had to start the divide.
After swapping his patch and keeping his eyes averted, the young man stepped to the side of the room with the 'O' on the floor.
Through the crowd, the white-haired girl glimpsed as his mother's lip trembled, a downcast look in her gaze.
No doubt desperate to get out, get free.
