So, my brilliant idea to let my pregnancy hormones dictate my actions wasn't my best move. Turns out, the universe acknowledges 'Sunday' as a day of rest, I should have known better. Aylin company was closed. My mission was not accomplished so I spent my time parked outside a McDonald's parking lot to drinking a strawberry McFlurry. I finished the last drops of the McFlurry from the straw, a soft slurp resonated through the air, while I talked to myself in my angry state. I'm sure people who walked by thought I was crazy.
Today, I went to Aylin's production company waiting for the receptionist to call me to meet with Aylin. I glanced at my phone, the minutes crawling by. When I was finally in her office, her voice sliced through the air with its signature edge. "What are you doing here, Sanem?"
I met her gaze with fire. "How dare you take my script and hand it off to Hulu?"
e She laughed. "That's what you're here for?"
My voice, sharp. "You played me. You made me believe I wasn't good enough, fired me, and then... you took my script?!"
Aylin surged to her feet, her hands slamming against the desk, the wood vibrating with the force of her fury. "Let me remind you," she spat, "you signed a contract. No one forced you to work with me. That means all creative projects you produce while under my roof belong to me. You can whine and pout all you like, but this is the nature of the business."
"I deserve writing credit," I insisted, my voice trembling, but my resolve solid.
"No, you don't." Aylin's eyes were cold. "This is my company, that was my contract. You were fired. So get out! And if you dare to get in my way... I will destroy you." The threat hung in the air, heavy and absolute.
As I walked away, I vowed that Aylin Yükselen will remember me.
"Hey, love, is everything ok?" Can gently whispers in my ear as he leans on my desk. I look around embarrassed that my colleagues are looking at us. It still takes me a minute to be romantic in public.
"Honestly, not really..." I say pushing back my glasses.
"Is it because of the appointment today?" He is referring to our OB appointment later today and because I didn't want to ruin his excitement to see our baby again, I nodded.
He kisses my forehead. "Don't be nervous. I'll be with you."
Before I could respond, Emre calls Can to show him some reports.
----***----
Can squeezed my hand. We have been waiting for our third month appointment. The door opened and Dr. Arsian entered, her smile instantly making me feel at ease. "Ready to check on the little one?" she asked, her voice gentle and soothing.
Before the examination, I was weighed, and the doctor confirmed that I had gained 2.3 kg. "The weight gain is fine, " Dr. Arsian said. She asked me how I was feeling so I told her about my constipation and the vaginal discharged I've experienced. It was embarrassing saying this in-front of Can. She nodded and kept asking me about my vitamins and mental health. Can also chimed in when we talked about food, he was happy to tell her how he has me eating healthy organic foods.
"So far you mommy is looking good... let's check the baby."
I nodded, my free hand rested on her tiny belly. Can leaned closer, instinctively wanting to be near. Dr. Arsian expertly applied the cold gel to my abdomen, the cool sensation momentarily gave me a shiver. Then, she inserted the ultrasound wand, moving it slowly. The screen flickered to life, showing a fuzzy, grayscale image.
"There's the sac..." Dr. Arsian murmurs.
We leaned closer, when Dr. Arsian zoomed the screen and a tiny flickering shape, no bigger than a bean, appeared, wriggling slightly within the sac.
