Part 28: Smartie Kid

Madison's POV....

It was hot in the desert as Sandy continued to drive, "Are we sure we're going in the right direction?" Sandy asked, looking at the mirror to see the blue lighting then fixing it so it focused on us.

"Not a clue. All Monkey King said to do was head west, so—" Tang said and Mei grabbed the map from him, "How did anyone ever get anywhere using these!" I look up to see Monkey King doing some meditation. "Yo, blue thing. You wanna crank up that AC, brother?" Monkey King asked, "That thing is on blast." Persephone said to him.

"Let me see." Macaque grabbed the map from Mei, "Okay, just a few more miles and we'll be out." He said and everyone cheered, grateful that Macaque was able to decipher the map. "Glad that Macaque is being helpful. Unlike some other monkey." Pigsy said and turned to glare at Monkey King who was pretending to sleep.

"Guys, Monkey King needs to recharge after his fight with Ne Zha. He's in no state to waste his time on mere mortals, especially now I don't have my powers." MK said, "Whoa! He told you that?" Pigsy said shocked, "A little blunt there." I say, even though that was how Monkey King said it. Word for word.

"We have a very honest relationship, Pigsy. Besides, that kind of mystic monkey mediation requires complete focus, apparently."  MK said as Monkey King scratched his leg, I hear Macaque mumble something under his breath but not that well.

"Come on, gang, don't be so glum!" Sandy said to us, trying to lift the mood. "Roll down that window, a little fresh air never hurt. Ah! That's so much worse!" I hear Sandy yell as Persephone puts the fire out on him.

"Kid, you know there is more to you than just your powers, right?" Pigsy asked, "Exactly! I've accepted that until I get my staff back, I'm not gonna be the Strong One anymore. Which is why I'm gonna be...The Smart One!" MK announces and we all immediately fell to the ground. "Seriously!? Out of all the roles? You pick the Smart One?" I ask MK.

"A squared plus B squared equals C squared! That's a triangle, boy!" He said. "Right. So how does this map work exactly? How does it find the three Rings of Samadhi?" Tang asked, "Easy. It's—-" Persephone was about to say more but was stopped by MK, "This sounds like a job for Smartie Kid!" He said as MK stared intensely at the map. "I mean, I guess that symbol kind of looks like that one?" He said, pointing at a red ring.

"What? Those smudgy looking things?" Mei asked, "I think those are clues." I said, "Those firey looking ones?" MK asked, "Listen, it's just—-" Persephone was about to say more but MK cuts her off, "I got this!" He said.

Then suddenly the van stopped moving and we all get out. Me, Pigsy, Mei and Tang all take our jackets off and MK grabs Monkey King out the van, "So. How is meditating going to help him recharge or whatever he's doing?" Mei asked, "I don't know. He was a little sketchy on the details." MK said.

Flashback~~

MK and Monkey King were in the back of the van, meditating, "Sometimes to find what we've lost, we need to begin where we started. Look within ourselves so I'm gonna do just that and go into some deep meditation. Wake me up sometime in the next, uh, I don't know 100 years, okay bye!" Monkey King said before going deep into his mystic monkey meditation.

Flashback ends~~

MK pokes Monkey King trying to wake him up. "Is he really meditating?" I asked Macaque, "Who knows? He''s using any excuse to be lazy." He said and then Tang yelped, "OMG you guys. Is that--" He pointed to a pool of luxurious water, "Water!" We all yelled and ran towards it.

"Did they just leave us?" Macaque asked Persephone, "Yep. They just did." She said and turned to Wukong who fell on his side, "We know you're still awake, Wukong. Stop faking." She told him and Wukong gulped, still continuing to be in meditation. "Let's go find them. They're at that junkyard all the way over there." Persephone said.

Meanwhile...

"MK! No!" I yelled as MK puts Hade's sword on table next to the deed to Pigsy's Noodles, "MK. This better work!" Pigsy said as Tang held him. He had just lost Mei's sword and now wanted to bet on me and Pigsy's items?! "MK, if you lose my sword---" I was going to say more but Sandy's hand covered my mouth.

"Pigsy, Maddie, trust me. Based on the law of averages, I'm bound to win eventually." MK said, "That is not how math works!" Me and Pigsy yelled at him. The Fish Demon puts a bowl on top of Monty again and shuffles them around. I watched intensely as MK then pointed to the one in the middle, "Oh, tough break, little buddy. Care to try again?"

Then it started to turn in chaos, MK started to bet on everything we had--even Monkey King himself! While Persephone and Macaque were just laughing at all of this, "The kid is really betting on everything!" Persephone said, clutching her stomach, "This should be a problem." Macaque said, trying to hide (but fails) his smirk.

"Well, well, well. It looks like you've wagered just about everything you have kiddo, tough break guys." The fish demon said to MK, "This is impossible. B-but I'm the smart one! The law of averages has betrayed me." He exaggerated.

"Kid, just forget it. We don't got anything else to bet." Pigsy said, "He's right, you know besides what more could a goldfish want? I have all the treasures in the world." The fish demon said, "I'm gonna punch him." I say, holding a fist up. "Calm down, Mel. We shouldn't be picking fights." Macaque told me and then MK gasped loudly.

"Wait, I do have one last thing I can wager." MK said, holding the scroll. We all gasped at this, "MK, don't be crazy!" Tang shouts, "He's right. It took me and Wukong everything to get that!" Persephone said. "I bet the power of friendship!"  MK announced. "WHAT?" We all yell at him and MK throws us into the pile. I hear him talk about how he wouldn't lose since we were at stake and how the fish demon could use us as servants. "We can attack him if MK loses right?" I asked Macaque who just nodded.

"Where is Monty?" The fish demon asked, "The one in the middle." MK said, "Oh, so sad, too bad, but---" The fish demon gasped loudly as he removed the bowl only to reveal Monty, "Impossible! How did you?" The fish demon asked MK.

"It's simple really. You were fooling us the whole time, but I, Monkie Kid, delivery boy, somewhat equal to heaven, saw right through your trick!" MK pointed to the table and revealed a trap door underneath it as we all gasped. "You rigged this table so no matter what plate Monty was, he would drop out from under it just as your contestants made their choice! Which makes you a cheater!" MK yelled.

Instantly all six of us stood between MK and the fish demon in anger, "Now, now, now, listen, uh, we can make a deal...friends?" He asked. "Oho, we'll make a deal alright." Mei said, "Leave nothing behind." I tell everyone.

Later...

Sandy was putting the rocket booster on the van and fixed the engine with Persephone helping him, while the rest of us were inside listening to how MK got his golden vision back, "So wait how did you get your gold vision back again?" Mei asked again, "I don't know. The same way I got them in the first place, I guess. Every time I learned a new ability, it was because there was something I needed to do when there was no other way. Against the goldfish guy, I needed to do something to save my friends." MK explained.

"Yeah, friends that you put in danger on purpose." Pigsy said.

"Yeah, right, uh-huh, like I said save my friends and then I don't know it just happened." MK said, "You found your strength. When you needed it most." Monkey King said as he got out of his meditation. "Oh look who decided to wake up from his so-called meditation. How was it, Wukong?" Macaque said with a smirk and Monkey King said nothing but held a fist up.

"This whole time I thought my powers came from the staff." MK said and Monkey King puts a hand on his shoulder, "The staff is just a big ol stick bud. It takes someone special to lift it." Monkey King said as he ruffled MK's hair, "Well, one power down. Just a few thousand more to go!" Monkey King said as Sandy drove the van.
