There was a bitter aftertaste to it all, even though you were trying your hardest to ignore it.
You went back to sleep and as soon as you woke up the next day, you packed most of your stuff. Jungkook was at work, and since there wasn't much to pack up to begin with, you managed to get it over with in record time. Like ripping off a band-aid. You decided to come back another day for things that weren't too important and those that didn't fit into your suitcase.
Going back to your own apartment felt foreign. It seemed frozen in time, as if bartender you had just left the house in a hurry for a late night shift. There were makeup products still scattered around that had started to catch dust and the laundry basket was still half full with work pants, white shirts and waistcoats. The singular plant on the windowsill was still holding on to dear life, though most of its leaves had wilted. Your fridge was empty save for condiments and dipping sauces, so you went grocery shopping before unpacking.
You wanted to call Hoseok and ask him to come over, but the reality was that your place desperately needed a deep clean, so you ate alone before getting started on fixing everything. There wasn't much time left before you were about to start your new job, which was good, because that meant there was no time to ponder over any unsaid words.
The next day, you visited your mother, and the day after that, she was discharged. You went to your parent's home to help out with getting things in order and tidying up before your father drover her home. While Jisung made rice porridge, you went out to buy some flowers and hopefully brighten the whole situation.
Monday rolled around faster than expected and you found yourself with a folder in your hands and on your way to the address written on it. You had already signed all the documents prior to this of course, and the only thing left was to just... enter through the front door and ask someone where to get started.
You were right on time, dressed in a white, collared shirt and pleated pants and hopefully enough caffeine in your system so you could blame your anxiety on it instead of on yourself. You entered through the revolving glass doors and the ground floor war awfully quiet, which meant you couldn't prolong this any more.
"Good morning, I'm Park Y/N, I'm supposed to start my training today?"
She nodded and typed something into your computer. Then she picked up the phone and called someone.
"Park Y/N is here."
With that, she hung up and told you someone will be with you shortly.
And by that she really meant shortly, because not even a minute later, a man showed up in the otherwise empty ground floor.
He gave you a polite smile while walking over to you, the dimples on his cheeks visible even from where you stood.
"Good morning. So you're our new hire, Y/N? My name is Kim Namjoon, I'll be giving you a tour through the building and show you to your office after that." He shook your hand.
An office? That wasn't part of the deal you had with Jungkook.
So this was Namjoon. One of the few people who knew the truth about your relationship with Jungkook.
The black glass frames suited his black hair really well. No one said anything as you made your way to the elevator. Only when the doors closed did he say something.
"I heard you're great at negotiating. I think you'll love it here."
"Why is that?"
He chuckled. "Well, for one, that deal with the Japanese branch is basically your doing. Someone let slip that you and Mrs. Ito are basically best friends now."
It was your turn to chuckle. "I can hardly call that negotiating. We just chatted a little, not even about the deal. I had no idea it even happened, last I heard about it, it was-"
- during the fight you had with Jungkook. It wasn't that long ago, barely more than a week. Still, it felt like ages. With so many things happening in-between and so many emotions involved, that dinner was like a lifetime ago.
"- last thing I heard about it, Mrs. Ito said she was going to look over those documents."
"Oh, you didn't know?"
You glanced over to him, eyebrow raised.
"They took the deal. Like, the day after the dinner."
Huh. Interesting.
"Anyways, let's get you started here", he said just as the elevator door opened on the tenth floor.
The hallway was brightly lit, with a few plant pots here and there from which giant monstera leaves were growing. Namjoon showed you to the executives' offices and told you if you were ever called there that it would either be for a promotion or for getting fired. You made a mental note to try and avoid that floor for now. You took the stairs a floor down and made it to one of the break rooms, then went over to some offices and different departments that might be relevant for you.
"Alright, right over there is Jungkook's office."
For a moment, you feared he was gonna stop in front of the door and knock. Fortunately, he walked past it while explaining that you might have to go over to his office during the next few weeks to get his approval for some documents before you could take the decisions unsupervised.
You reached the seventh floor after being shown the rest of the ones above and after walking past yet another break room, Namjoon stopped in front of a simple black door. The tag read "Park, Y/N".
He handed you an envelope that he must've picked up when giving you the tour since he definitely wasn't holding it when you met downstairs.
"Inside is the passkey, you might want to keep it hidden from some people since they tend to just enter even though the door is locked. Talk about being able to take a hint. The doors are usually unlocked, but you should lock it whenever you leave the office because of insurance reasons. Or if you need to meet a deadline and don't want to be disturbed."
You nodded and opened the envelope and entered the passcode while Namjoon was standing next to you. The air conditioning inside was already on, which meant it didn't smell as stale as you would have expected. On top of that, there were two plants on the desk, a kettle in the corner with two cups and two spare chairs on the other side of your office chair. Overall, an average small office with neither anything spectacular about it nor anything unpleasant.
Namjoon followed you inside.
"There is a folder on the desk with your log-in information and a schedule with things you'll have to hand in this week. I'll be assisting you until lunch and after that you can get started on some first tasks. My office is right next door on the right, so don't hesitate to ask any questions. Is there anything else you'd like to know or see before we start?"
"No, at least not right now."
Namjoon nodded and encouraged you to go over to the desk and log into the computer.
With that, your first day of work started, and ended surprisingly fast.
By the time lunch came around, Namjoon had given you an introduction to the company mailing system, the statistics program and the basics of the of an editing program you were supposed to already be familiar with. Your skills were rusty, but Namjoon was surprisingly patient and helped you get back into it.
You had almost forgotten what he might be thinking of you.
Since he knew the truth about how you had received this job, you expected him to at least be a little judgy about it. After all, you had conned your way in, and even though Jungkook had been more generous than expected by giving you your own office, you were almost certain that you lacked the actual skills for this type of responsibility and had a lot of things to improve on. If he was judging you for being so incompetent, he was at least doing so very subtly.
"Do you want to have your lunch here or would you like to join me in the cafeteria? I heard they're serving bingsoo today for dessert and I could introduce you to some of the colleagues."
You agreed to join him.
