A D I T I

Past: Age: Nine

“There have been a lot of times when our school has been ranking on the top, they always…” I have zero idea about what the principal of our school is saying on the mic. As per my class teacher’s words I am supposed to receive a prize so I am standing here trying to think.

I slid my eyes to the side, looking at the bushes which had wild flowers and beside that there were tulips. They look pretty and Papa was correct, we should go on school trips so we can learn a lot and it's the second day of our educational trip.

I wonder what would happen if all of these people in the biological park turned into zombies? What if they run behind us to attack us? Even worse, what if the principal turns into a zombie? That would be so crazy. Which means no principle, no school, no studies, no exams.

Hurray!

“And the best speech award goes to Aditi Shekhawat.” I flinched a bit at the sudden announcement of my name but soon my lips curled into a smile as I walked out of the queue and moved to the principal sir. My hands are curled into a ball and I want to grip my skirt, to calm myself but that would leave a negative image behind.

The principal was holding a certificate in his hand and as I stood on the pavement, I smiled, thanking everyone like the teacher told me to even though no one really helped me learn the speech. I was nervous, thinking that what if I made some mistake and became a topic of laughter among them? Or what if I won't be able to speak?

Everyone clapped for me, it was an indication that I did good. My class teacher, Ms. Suze is looking at me with an ear to ear smile showing a thumbs up before murmuring something to the other teacher. I scanned the crowd trying to search for my best friend when my eyes fell on a tall kid looking at me from a distance. He wasn't from our school but he was way taller and he looked sad.

Once we were dismissed, I plugged a tulip from the little tulip garden. I always thought tulips lack fragrance, but today when I have laid my hands on them, I can smell them. It's a mild smell but so sweet. My teacher said not all tulips have fragrance, just a few specific types are blessed with it.

I handed the certificate to my class teacher and stepped out of my friends group in order to search for that boy. He was taller and I want to grow tall too so maybe if I give him this tulip he might share his secret of height. Then no one will tease me. Unfortunately I couldn't find him in the park.

“Everyone! Stand here, we are going back to the dorm.” I heard our teacher scream and instantly turned to look at her. Should I go to her or search for that tall boy? I turned back, looking for him but couldn't find him. “Aditi! Come here,” My teacher’s alarming voice reached my ear and I clenched my fingers around the stem of the flower before running towards her.
