Things between Mahir and me have been... surprisingly peaceful these past few days. Too peaceful, if you ask me. Suspiciously peaceful.
He hasn't been barking orders like a drill sergeant or glaring at me like I just committed corporate treason. In fact, he's been nice.
Gentle, even.
The other day, he held the elevator door open for me. Held it open. Like a gentleman. Not the usual Mahir move of pressing the 'close' button repeatedly while maintaining eye contact like a supervillain.
Even the people at the office have noticed. I overheard Kaya Ma'am whispering to someone that she thinks Mahir's been abducted by aliens and replaced with a nicer clone. I can't even blame her. The man has been oddly considerate, and it's making my head spin.
I've been trying to figure it out, replaying every interaction in my head, searching for a hidden motive. Maybe he's dying. Maybe he really is possessed. It would explain the eerie politeness. I'll have to look up local exorcists later.
I'm so lost in my thoughts that I almost don't notice him walking into the parking lot, his phone pressed against his ear, his jaw tight.
I frown, watching him pace near his car, his shoulders tense, his brows furrowed. Who's making him mad? He was so content this morning. Especially after the success of the Apex Amusement campaign. We're getting another contract with the same conglomerate. That's like winning the corporate lottery.
He should be celebrating. He should be gloating about his genius strategy and lording it over me like he usually does. So why does he look like he's about to punch a wall?
I open my mouth to ask, but before I can get a word out, he turns and walks straight up to me, his face softening as his gaze meets mine. It's the softest I've ever seen him look. My heart does a weird flippy thing that I absolutely refuse to acknowledge.
He hands me his car keys. "Can you go home by yourself today?"
I blink at the keys, then at his face. "Uh... sure, but... why?"
