[MASON]

The sound of Kye's steady breathing and the giant's body beneath him made it easy to forget about the worries and questions that usually gnawed at the edges of his mind. For now, he was content to be here, in this moment.

But eventually, his body began to cramp up, his limbs slowly coming to life with a dull ache—his back ached, his neck was sore, and a headache still simmered in the background from the remnants of last night's drinking. It was all enough to drag him from the peaceful cocoon he'd found in Kye's embrace.

He blinked his eyes open, the faint morning light warming his face. His gaze fell on Kye, who was still lying there, his arm around Mason's back, holding him close. Despite Kye's size, there was something gentle in the way the giant's fingers curled around him, a subtle reassurance that made Mason's chest tighten. It was strange, this feeling. He wasn't used to it, hadn't been in a position to trust someone like this, but here he was, perfectly still in Kye's embrace, feeling more safe than he had in a long time.

The truth settled over him slowly, a quiet weight in the back of his mind. He couldn't ignore it anymore: this wasn't just a friendly connection. There was something else, something deeper, that he didn't know how to navigate yet.

Mason shifted, trying to move but being held too tightly. He wiggled, testing Kye's grip, and found it loosened just enough to allow him to inch away slightly. He raised himself up slightly, careful not to disturb Kye too much, and found himself staring at the ceiling as the weight of everything settled in again.

What the hell was this?

Mason let out a quiet sigh. He didn't have the answers. It wasn't like he could ask Kye what this was, could ask about their connection or the things that had been building between them over the last few weeks. That would only make everything more complicated than it already was.

He rubbed a hand over his face, feeling the faint flush of embarrassment creeping up his neck. He wasn't good at this—whatever this was. He wasn't good at letting himself feel anything that might matter too much.

With a reluctant glance at Kye's sleeping form, Mason stood up on the mattress, careful not to knock anything over. The bed was massive to him, and standing on it felt almost surreal, the height difference between them stark, especially with Kye still sprawled out in the middle of the bed, the expanse of it practically swallowing Mason whole. It was a reminder of just how different they were in so many ways.

Mason glanced at Kye, watching the way he was still curled on his side, lips parted slightly as he exhaled slowly. Mason's heart twisted again, something small and fluttering in his chest, and for a moment, he let himself linger in the softness of the moment. But that fluttering feeling quickly turned into something else: uncertainty.

He crossed his arms, standing at the edge of the bed, looking down at Kye as if trying to read something in the giant's peaceful face. He couldn't keep avoiding it. He had to ask.

"Hey, Kye?" he murmured, voice thick with sleep but still clear.

Kye stirred slightly, his eyelids fluttering open as he let out a low groan. "Yeah?" His voice was rough from sleep.

Mason hesitated, his mouth dry. He didn't know how to put this into words. "What... what is this?" He gestured vaguely between them, his palms turned up as if trying to encompass everything—the closeness, the way they were together, this new, strange dynamic.

Kye blinked up at him, still groggy. He seemed to hesitate as well, taking in the question, his brow furrowing slightly. "I don't know," Kye admitted quietly, propping himself up on one elbow, his gaze finding Mason's. "It's... something. I guess."

The uncertainty in Kye's voice mirrored Mason's own, and they both lingered in that silence, unsure of how to navigate this place they'd found themselves in.

Mason finally lowered himself back down to the bed, sitting at the edge, his legs dangling over the side. "I don't know either," he murmured, his fingers brushing over the blankets absentmindedly. "But I guess we don't have to figure it out right now."

Kye nodded slowly, his hand reaching out to tug a corner of the blanket over them both, the silence between them growing a little more comfortable. "Yeah. Maybe we just let it be for a bit. No rush."

Mason offered a small smile, still unsure but at least feeling like he wasn't alone in the confusion. "Yeah," he echoed softly. "No rush."

They didn't need to figure it all out now. They could just... be, for a little while longer, wrapped in the warmth of the moment, and let everything else wait.

In a world where so much was uncertain, it felt like enough for now.

And so, without saying another word, they let themselves drift back into the quiet, just a little bit closer, just a little bit more comfortable in the space they shared.
