Epilogue: Love's Sad Ending
Peter stood in the courtyard the day before they were all set to return to their world, staring at the setting sun through a window. Aslan had already spoken to him, told him that he was never to return to Narnia and that Lilith was willing to join him and his siblings in his world. However that was not what had Peter staring off into the sunset. His mind was on what Aslan had said afterwards, once Susan had left to go spend time with Caspian.
The Great Lion had called him back to his side as Peter was about to leave, fixing him with his steady, kind gaze. Peter had known then that whatever he was to say to him would not be what he wanted to hear.
Aslan had told him of Lilith's longing for her old home. He had told Peter of the friends that would welcome her back to Avalon with open and loving arms. He had also told Peter that if she returned she would flourish, even if she was heartbroken, for fae are hardy creatures. That eventually all pain fades to dull aching. That while she would never love another like she loved him, she would be happy and she would live on to have a good life of laughter and possibility.
Peter had protested at this, saying that Lilith could be happy with him in his world. That he loved her and he would show her how to enjoy his homeland. That they would be together, always.
The Lion had stopped him with a deep stare as he shook his head. Lilith was not made to survive a world of smoke and iron. A world where magic was rare and near impossible to find. She was meant for nature and freedom, where she could speak to animals and fly through the air chasing birds and laughing with friends. That no matter how much she loved him, she would not find what she needed in Peter's world.
Aslan, while reluctant to suggest it, had told Peter that he had best let Lilith go. That she would be devastated, but eventually she would be joyful. Not for losing him, but for gaining a life she could live and prosper in.
It had been with those words that Aslan finished their conversation. Walking slowly away from Peter to leave him with his thoughts.
As the sun began to sink lower and lower and the night began to near that Peter made his decision. Whilst it was a hard one that would hurt him immensely, Aslan was right. Lilith could not be happy in his world. All the love in the universe could not prevent her from suffocating in the world Peter was from.
"Peter."
Peter snapped his head around, his gaze landing on the very woman of his thoughts. She looked stunning in a gown of deep green with the dying light reflected in her eyes. There had never been a moment where Peter had not wished he could kiss her more than he did seeing her like she was.
"Lilith," he breathed, feeling a stabbing of pain in his chest. "I need to speak to you before you go off to dinner."
The fae smiled kindly at him, her eyes wide and hopeful as she stepped closer. "What is it we need to talk about?" She asked.
Peter took a deep breath, knowing that his next words would be final and that they would cause her suffering almost had him walking away. He didn't want to break the heart of the woman he loved.
Closing his eyes he spoke the terrible words.
"I do not love you anymore. You are released from the bind of your love for me."
The End
∆∆∆
Please, do not hate me. It was the only way I could picture myself ending the story of Peter and Lilith.
If it will give you any solace, Lilith turned to Avalon and Peter to his world. Both found happiness again, Peter in his love of learning and in the arms of a young woman from his world. While Lilith found it in helping Tatiana rebuild her kingdom. She helped creatures of magic and righted many of the wrongs the fae had done in the past before she chose to die shortly after her friend Tatiana was killed during a battle.
