A light hand on Beth's shoulder alerted her to an odd presence. "Beth, wake up," a voice said as the hand continued to shake her shoulder. Beth groaned and rolled her head to the side, the ground underneath her was uncomfortable to say the least. "Beth!" The voice yelled. Her eyes flew up as she felt a stinging pain being delivered to her cheek.
"Did you just slap me ?" Beth asked in disbelief as she looked up at the white haired boy leaning over her. She lifted her hand and placed it on her slightly heated cheek as she sat up.
"I had no choice, it was either slap you or wait an eternity. I may have eternity, but you certainly do not. Now come on, stand up." Jonathan held out his hand for Beth who gladly took it and pulled herself up to a standing position. She brushed the red dust off her T-shirt and quickly glanced around to establish her whereabouts. "You're back in Edom. I thought that was obvious since I'm here and, as I told you before, I can't leave." Beth raised and eyebrow up at him and brushed the last trace of dust from her body.
"Thanks, genius. Why am I here? Last I checked, I was pretty much dead," she said. Jonathan laughed slightly and pretend to wipe away a tear before pulling his lips into a straight line.
"You're not dead, just sleeping. Well, that's the nice way to put it. The blade that stabbed you had demon blood on the tip, it spread through your system like a wildfire. Magnus had a hard time trying to clear it all up," he said. Beth remembered the blood that was on the blade. It was the same colour as human blood yet was oddly shiny, though she thought it was nothing at first. The fact that the Rouge had taken down a demon before coming after her was surprising to say the least. Rouge's normally got on well with the demons, I mean they were on the same side. Unless the blood was put there deliberately, Beth could think of no other reason as to why it was on the blade.
"Why do that? It makes no sense. The Rouge said someone wanted to talk to me and had been instructed to bring me to them alive. If demon blood was on the blade, then they were trying to kill me!"
"Maybe not. It's odd, but it could be possible. I think it may have been some kind of test," Jonathan said, his voice was quite, as though he was thinking of something.
"A test?" Beth asked. It seemed strange to her that a Rouge would be testing her. It was even stranger that they would use demon blood to do so. The Rouges were known for being vicious, that's for sure, but there were no stories of them testing anyone. Beth's mind reeled with all sorts of questions, but there were no answers for any of them.
"Yes, a test. I have heard of only a few of these tests, but they all failed. Whatever they are trying to identify, it isn't working. At least not in the way they hoped it would. The question is, why go after you?"
"I'm sure you can answer that one. After all, you do hear everything, or am I wrong?" She asked.
"You're not wrong, but some things should just stay under wraps." It was then that the walls around them began to crumble for a second time. "I'm sorry, I can't tell you anything else. When I know something, you'll know something. I promise." With that he was gone.
Beth was plunged into what seemed like a never-ending darkness. No matter where she looked, it was always the same scene. Darkness. It was as if she was alive, but only just. A Purgatory state. Yet it made no sense. She had survived ingesting demon blood before and didn't need some baloney from a Warlock, nor was she trapped in total darkness. Whatever she had ingested, whatever had been on the end of that knife, was not good.
She was unsure how long she had been in the purgatory state. It felt like days, weeks even, but she wouldn't believe it. "It has to be two days at maximum, any longer just sounds stupid," she said to herself as she sat on the floor. Or at least, she thought it was a floor. She couldn't see it, could only feel it beneath her feet, it was as if there was nothing really there. Like the floor was made of glass and all it was doing was reflecting what was around her. Maybe that's all it was, four mirrors that reflected only themselves and created a never-ending darkness.
