As the battle approached, the Institute was thrown into a frenzy as everyone tried to prepare for the impending fight. Even Jocelyn and Elizabeth had joined in with the final round of training, much to their own annoyance. They may have wanted the Shadowhunter killings to stop, but they didn't want to get involved themselves. Both believed that it was up to Jonathan and Beth as they were the main reason all of this was happening, and it had been their idea from the start. Neither could understand why everyone was so willing to throw themselves into danger because two children said so. They had already fought their battle and won, this was for the new generation of Shadowhunters to sort out.
Whilst everyone trained in the normal, Shadowhunter way, Beth and Jonathan were trying to find an alternative way to defeat Lilith. They knew there had to be another way around it, but they were finding it hard to prove their theory. The book was no help either. It contained information regarding the Rune and that was as far as it went. Everything else related to Runes, or other information that was vital to a Rogue or ExShadowhunter. There was nothing that could use if they were going to have any chance of taking down Lilith without the possibility of one of them getting killed.
They needed a new plan.
Clearly the book was going to be of help, both of them realised that as soon as they drew a blank during the second search. The only problem was that neither of them knew just what they were going to do. It was almost impossible to defeat Lilith on physical strength alone and they needed a secret weapon.
"What are we going to do?" Beth asked Jonathan.
"I don't know, there is no way around this. We're going to have to use the Rune and hope, for our sake, that it all goes according to plan," Jonathan replied, closing the book and running his fingers along the spine.
"Mm," Beth replied, playing with her hands. Truth was, that even she was beginning to doubt the plan. Both knew it was the only option, but neither wanted to go through with it fully.
Beth and Jonathan sat on the floor of the Library in complete silence, neither of them wanting to say anything nor go back to the training room. They didn't want to be reminded of what was to come. Jonathan sighed loudly and placed the book beside him, before pushing himself up. Beth watched but said nothing, nor did she try to stop him she knew that whatever he was going to do, he was going to do for a reason and didn't see much point in putting a stop to it.
Jonathan put his hand out towards Beth and waited for her to grab it. He know what he was doing and hoped that she would catch on eventually. Beth looked at him, her eyebrows furrowed together in confusion. Having no idea what he was doing, she decided to trust, for what reason she didn't know. She reached out and placed her hand in his, surprised to find it rather cold rather than hot and sticky. Jonathan closed his fingers around her hand and pulled up so she was standing in front of her. "Phone," he said, holding his hand. Beth passed him her phone and watched whilst he scrolled through her apps until he found the one he was looking for.
"What are you doing?" Beth asked, watching him curiously.
"I figured that with all this fighting, there isn't a chance of us having a Christmas party and I have always wanted to dance at one of those, so why not do it now?" Jonathan shrugged. He hadn't exactly thought the reasoning through fully but figured it was better than just saying he wanted to dance with her.
"Okay," Beth replied, dragging the word out as long as she felt necessary. Jonathan nodded and pressed play on the soundtrack, waiting for it to load. Considering what his excuse was, Beth was surprised that he wasn't playing some kind of Christmas music. Instead, it was a slow instrumental soundtrack.
"Come on," Jonathan said, holding his hand for Beth once again. Beth smiled slightly and placed her hand in his own, noticing almost immediately that it was no longer cold, but warm, indicating that he was a little bit nervous.
Jonathan placed his other hand on Beth's waist and pulled her closer towards him, a small smile showed on his face, but Beth didn't notice. Very slowly, they began to move to the music, neither of them caring that someone may enter the room at any moment. They didn't care. For once it was only them, no one else. They didn't have to worry about Lilith, or their parents, no one.
Beth found the situation incredibly relaxing and even went as far as to rest her head on Jonathan's shoulder, glad to be in a relaxing environment. She had forgotten just what it felt like to be relaxed. Everything from the past few weeks just faded away before her. She forgot all about Lilith, about her mum and dad, about the Rogue attacks. Nothing seemed to matter within that small moment. In fact, it was one of the best moments they had had since this all started.
They were so focused on what they were doing, that neither of them noticed Charie come running into the room with a panicked look on his face. "Oi! Lovebirds, you need to come with me," he said.
"Why? What's up?" Beth asked, turning to look at Charlie whilst Jonathan paused the music.
"There's been another attack, a serious one," he said, before running out of the room. Beth looked at Jonathan and took her phone off him before the two of them left the library and followed Jonathan towards the training room.
As they followed him, both began to wonder what he meant by the attack being 'serious'. It was only logical that all of the attacks had been serious, so what had made this one so dramatic that he needed to break from training? Well, whatever it was, they were going to find out.
Entering the training room, they noticed a TV screen showing a news channel that neither Beth nor Jonathan had heated of before. They stood beside Charlie and watched the news reader explain what was going on.
"Reports are coming in of a serious attack in downtown New York that is currently ongoing. Witnesses say that two men, dressed all in black, charged down the street with swords and attacked anyone who crossed their path. Motives are currently on known and police are finding it hard to catch the suspects. They're described as tall, medium build men covered in very small, white scars. Their current whereabouts are unknown to authorities."
Beth looked at Jonathan, then to the others, all looked just as shocked as she felt. No one spoke, they were all too busy trying to process the information before they said anything about it. It was Beth that spoke first, and what she did was something none of them wanted to hear.
"We have to do it today."
