Several days passed without incident. Beth had spent almost every day in the Weapons room with Charlie and he was still trying to beat her at her own game. He had not mentioned the Rouge attack since the day he showed up at the Institue, in fact, no one had mentioned it. Magnus hadn't been in contact either. Alec had said that he was always working, even if he wasn't sure what he was. He didn't ask what was going on because he knew it would knock his focus, but it was clear that he was onto something very important.
Jonathan also hadn't been around. It was if he had no more information. Beth wasn't too fussed by this, she was glad at the opportunity to have some normal dreams before they were violently interrupted by Jonathan. It was as if the world had righted itself once again, even Charlie was talking about them both going back to England. "You know, I think this may be over," he had said one afternoon.
"So?" Beth asked as she set herself back into her starting position.
"So, we might be able to go home soon," he replied.
"Thank the Angel! I'm slowly going insane being here. Honestly, I'll be glad to back in school, even if that means under the wrath of Slimey Smith," she laughed.
"Well, that's an interesting development, you, missing school! This shall be written in the History books!" He exclaimed with a hint of sarcasm.
"Yeah, yeah. Don't mock." Beth raised her sword and pointed the end towards Charlie who raised his palms up in surrender. "Hey, could we venture to the outside later?"
"Why? I thought you like staying inside all day, it's all you ever did at home.
"I know, but I'm going insane. Besides, we're in America! I want to see it!" Charlie wondered for a moment. He had kept Beth inside the Institute for protection. He was certain that the Rouge attack wasn't just an accident. But, he could tell that she was going insane. She had spent every day inside the Weapons room training, preparing herself for another attack, even if it may not happen. Even Charlie knew that there was only a certain amount of training someone could do before they lost their mind and went insane.
"Okay, you go. But, take a dagger with you. You never know when you might need one." Beth nodded and handed him the sword before she grabbed a small dagger and quickly disappeared to her bedroom to change. Her workout gear was replaced with a pair of black skinny jeans, a light grey, loose-fitting T-shirt and her leather jacket. The trainers were replaced by boots, where she could easily hide the dagger from praying eyes. She slid the dagger into her boot and headed to the lift which took her down to the entrance of the Institute.
The sun was beating down on the streets of New York, but that didn't make the wind any less noticeable. Beth pulled her jacket tighter around her arms and headed out through the streets. Although she didn't have the slightest idea where she was going, it was good to be out of the Institute and on the streets, even if they were a bit scary. There were people darting about all over the place, hurrying to work or away from work.
Back in England, the city Beth had lived in, was never as hectic as Ner York. Granted, New York was the City that never sleeps, but it was still odd to see so many people in one place. It was more like a school corridor than a city centre. "America's nuts," Beth muttered as she slipped into a coffee shop. No one noticed her enter as she entered the room and headed towards the counter, she ordered a hot chocolate and sat down at one of the only free window seats in the shop.
Beth watched people walk backwards and forwards across the window as she sipped her hot chocolate cautiously, it was still boiling, but that didn't stop her. "Hey, Rachel!" A girl said, sliding into the seat opposite her.
"What?" Beth asked curiously.
"Don't look now, but there is a guy over in the corner taking photos of you," the girl muttered, the grin never leaving her face. Beth waited for a moment before glancing over her shoulder and looking over at the man sat at the counter. The pale scars from Runes laced his skin and Beth instantly knew what it meant. He was a Rouge. "I'll stay here whilst you drink that and then we need to leave," the girl said.
