POV: Lesly
I clench the steering wheel as I sit in the driveway of Melony's house. I know inside is a convicted killer whose parents just tried to kill my only two friends. I'm 80% sure Dakota won't hurt me, but it's that 20% that has me hesitating.
I don't know what kind of mental state she's in. She just saw the dead bodies of her parents with the girl she loves covered in their blood. She could be unhinged.
I glance at my open glove box, the gun glinting in the sunlight.
I take a calming breath before closing the glove box and getting out of the car, unarmed.
Melony so owes me big for this shit.
I put in my code before stepping inside the house.
It's dark and quiet.
I shut the door softly behind me and look around, I see Cali stretched out on the couch.
"D-Dakota?" I call.
No answer.
Oh please don't tell me she's on the run again.
I so don't want to be the one to break that news to Melony.
"Dakota!? It's me, Lesly!" I call louder.
Okay, I need to figure out where the hell Melony has been stashing her this whole time.
I turn on the lights and look around the house. Dakota must have stressed cleaned because this place is spotless, shining even. I go room by room and see no sign of her. Damn, she's good.
Where are you killer?
"Dakota! It's just me! Come out!" I shout louder.
The ceiling creaks above me, and I look up. I follow the creaks back to the attic door. I watch Dakota slide the wooden square to the side and dangle herself down before jumping the rest of the way. Not making a single sound as she does it.
Impressive.
"Okay, we searched that attic like a billion times, how?" I cross my arms.
She smirks at me.
I bet she loves feeling smarter than me.
Ugh.
Okay so I admit, she's growing on me, but still!
"Show me," I demand.
"Fine, but first, is Melony okay?"
"She's okay, she made me come check on you. Now show me."
She pulls down the attic ladder, it doesn't make a single sound. I see the side of the ladder is lined with felt to make it as silent as possible. We climb up and she walks carefully to the back, stepping over objects at just the right angles to not knock anything out of place.
I follow her to the back of the attic where she slides over what I thought was the end of the attic and reveals a secret door which she opens and reveals a hidden room.
"Whoa," I walk inside.
It's small but big enough to have someone in here for a while if needed.
"We built it when we were upgrading the house," she gloats.
"I underestimated you two," I shake my head.
"Melony is smarter than she looks," Dakota says smugly.
"Clearly," I mumble under my breath.
"Now tell me everything," she demands.
"Fine, but let's get out of here, it stinks. She really went overboard on the mothballs." I cough.
