One thing about Fiona was that she was incredibly superstitious. And if there was any day in the year she hated most, it had to be Halloween. She would skip it. Start setting up for Dia De Los Muertos extra early, and would ignore me anytime I brought up doing anything for Halloween beyond what she did in her business.
I, on the other hand, loved Halloween.
The costumes, the candy, the parties, the mischief. It was like all of my favourite things wrapped up in one. It had been so long since I had done anything for the holiday, since I spent most of my time with Fiona. I respected her wishes to work on her altar and spend the weekend with her relatives. But now that I was friends with Eddie, friends with his kid, and dating Buck, I could sneak away from her for one night to have a little bit of fun.
Maddie and I sat at my kitchen island, creating candy bags that Maggie and Daniel could hand out in the bakery. Buck claimed to be"helping" us but it was more like he was helping himself to the snacks. Fiona sat adjacent, icing four dozen cupcakes at my dining room table. She tended to bake in excessive amounts when she was anxious about something.
I was going all out in the candy bags with full-size candy bars, lollipops, Ring Pops, chips, and jack-o'-lantern-shaped cookies. Seeing as I tended to bake in excessive amounts when I was excited.
Maddie and Buck were exchanging stories about a call they shared where a supposed "ghost" had dialled 9-1-1, saving the life of another person who had gotten injured in the area.
"So, it was a ghost?" Buck whispered.
I held back a chuckle at his hesitance to speak about the topic out loud. While Fiona wasn't spooked by the idea of ghosts like he was, he definitely shared a lot of her other superstitions. It was interesting how similar they could be at times.
Maddie laughed too, "Why are you whispering? And what did I just say?"
"Yes, but your tech guy says it was some kind of glitch in the system." He said.
