Miss Peregrine questioned the Ymbryne council's decisions. What she couldn't understand was why they had treated Y/N so badly over the years. Yes, she was allowed to live in relative freedom, but with that came the worst responsibilities of all. Facing the Hollows and forcing her to bounce backwards and forwards all the time? She didn't know how Y/N managed it.
It had been two weeks since their 'Sunday', and they were so used to Y/N's presence that it came as a slight shock when she was requested to leave. It wasn't for long, of course, but after three and a half weeks of her constant presence, Alma had gotten used to having the company.
"How long will you be gone?" She had questioned the night before.
"It says that they only request an audience..." Y/N trailed off. "Here, read it to me again, though I can't imagine it'd be longer than 2 days..." Though she couldn't be sure. The Ymbryne council was known for their short notice and... Interesting... Decisions. Alma took the letter once more.
"Have they even told you why you're needed?" Alma questioned further, standing, walking from her desk to look out the window, back to Y/N. Y/N could smell the smoke from her pipe, and Alma was re-reading the letter.
"No, but I'm sure it'll be fine..." Y/N said, only trailing off. "Can you read what it says again to me?"
Alma didn't want to go through the trouble of reading all the garbled gibberish they call formalities. "Is it okay if I paraphrase?"
"Of course," Y/N said, taking a sip of her tea.
"You are invited to attend the next council meeting, and your presence is requested at another loop. You have been asked to please travel to the Ymbryne Academy and await further instruction." Alma paused. "What I don't understand is why you've been summoned to a different loop." Her brow was knitted, and she felt herself reaching for her pipe more.
If Y/N didn't know better, it would sound as though Alma was jealous.
"I'm sure they want me to do a routine check, nothing out of the ordinary for me," Y/N soothed, smiling amused to herself.
Alma turned, about to rebuke once again, when she saw her face. She turned once more to hide her blush.
"No use hiding," Y/N said, standing, walking around the desk, and placing a hand on the other woman's shoulder. "You forget I can see."
Y/N's smile was infectious, and she smiled back. Alma, though, once again caught sight of the blindfold. After the tenth day, she'd stopped asking, and so Alma had to get used to the stark white blindfold that made its appearance daily. She turned, placed her pipe and Y/N's letter on the desk and turned back.
"I just want you to be safe," Alma said, a little distractedly, as she reached for the tie to pull the blindfold off gently. "You're part of our family now," she barely whispered. Y/N could feel the sentimentality, the memories, pouring through Alma's emotions. She was so glad that she had found somewhere so nice, but Y/N knew that it would be cut short, the council needing her sight, using her only for her peculiarity.
Alma's emotions died, concern rippling through her as she watched Y/N's smile slowly fade she watched the other woman in thought.
"Promise me you'll come back?"
"Promise."
][===][
Two weeks and nothing.
It all felt wrong to Alma; to have been given such good company for 24 days, only to have it stripped away. She found herself in her study once more, scratching away with her pen, and barely acknowledging what she was writing. She was tired, having become used to the help. Alma looked to her pocket watch, yearning for it to tell her that the sun was going down, a chance to rest, only to sigh.
