It's no fun to be born as one of many princesses and princes... The strangest part of it all was the part father has more than one wife or husband. No, he has a lot of wives and husbands in the Shadow kingdom.... One of his husbands was my mother... Well I called him papa, because it's still not very common to call a male birth mother 'mother'. Father did tell me to call papa 'Mommy' instead, probably because it amused him. I obeyed, but only when father was around. Papa was very obedient, he was afraid of father's anger and his possessiveness... After all one of his wives had escaped the place... Lavina was her name and father was quite fond of her for some reason. Papa told me she went away when she was pregnant, but no one knew what had happened to her, the only thing he knew that she have had a son. His name wasn't known though. I was quite curious about this, but I decided not to do something to find out more incase father would become angry at me. I'm not the youngest, but I'm the youngest princess.

Father did think most of his children were special, but was most of the time hard on them... Although he kind of spoiled me, he was quite interested in the dreams I had, back then I didn't know why.... I just thought they were dreams. He wanted to see what my powers were, but I wasn't quite sure what they were anyways. I just tried things, some basic moves, like moving things by mind. Father seemed to be pleased even though I thought I didn't do a great job or anything. My other half-siblings did a lot better, especially Sydney and those twins; Gabriel and Gabrielle also known as Gabe and Gaby... Those three were once my best friends and of course my closest half-siblings. They taught me a lot of tricks and I slowly learnt more about my abilities. I was definitely skilled with the mind, my dreams could tell me a lot of information of real people. I also could predict a bit where people were hiding no matter if I knew they were hiding or not.

When I was twelve years old father told me I would have to marry Gabriel, apparently we would be a great match... In the beginning I didn't mind, because we were getting along very well. I simply was willing to do whatever he wanted me to do. The more time I spent with Gabe, the more I realised that I didn't love him like a lover should. I loved him like a sibling and a friend. He seemed to think the same about it, but he didn't look too happy about for some reason. I knew I simply should bear with the fact, because father's word is law... He would let us marry each other no matter what.

The same year I was exploring a lot, that also meant I went outside the shadow world so I could give father some more information about other kingdoms. I knew he would be pleased by that. Gabe told me to be careful though, he said father would get a fit if I get hurt. I told him I would be fine and he should simply try not worry about me. Perhaps he should have worried back then, because after this things had changed. Back then I wouldn't have known how much it change things in my life... An unexpected turn for me.

The Fire Kingdom was a lot different from the shadow kingdom. Things seemed so much more alive. The people seemed happy, the people in the shadow kingdom weren't. It made me wonder why those people seemed so happy..? Was it the way the kingdom was ruled which made the people feel content? It seemed so unreal to me after all those years in the shadows. People barely smiled, only royalty and the rich people smiled... It pissed me off back then and I decided to get closer to the castle. I needed be in the shadows though, because I really looked like I was coming straight from the shadow kingdom.

"Come on James, I want to enjoy the time I can play outside..!" A boy's voice said with a laugh. "I'm coming!" Another boy's voice said. Before I knew it I was two boys running towards the place I was standing. I knew I wasn't hiding to well and they blinked when they saw me. The redheaded boy was wearing a small crown on the top of his head. The blonde boy wore something like he was a guard. "Who are you? You don't look like you're from here..." The blonde boy said. "Be polite James, even to people who aren't from here." The redhead said. "But Jack... Doesn't she look suspicious..? I mean, look at her clothes... She looks like she's royalty, but from a darker place. Her skin is like she has never seen any sunlight.... Look she even wears a crown." The blonde- I mean, James said. "You're right... Excuse me, but where are you from?" Jack said, stepping a little closer. "I-I...." Before I knew it I ran away, knowing I shouldn't talk to them. "Hey..! Wait up!" I heard them say, knowing they ran after me. I tried to speed up, only causing me to trip over my own feet.

I was trembling slightly. "We're not going to hurt you." I heard Jack say. "Look, I think I know where you coming from... As long as you don't hurt us we won't hurt you." James said when I looked up. "Shadow Kingdom..." I mumbled softly. "I was right." James mumbled and then he held out a hand. I took it and then he helped me up. "Are you one of the children of the king..?" He asked and then I nodded. "Really? I've met a lot of princes and princesses, but I've never seen a prince or princess from the shadow kingdom." Jack said, looking quite interested.

We kept talking and I was having quite some fun with them. After quite some time I said my goodbye and went back to the shadow kingdom. Apparently father wasn't happy about the fact I went to the fire kingdom. Gabe had told father where I went and father demanded me to tell him what I was doing there. Being obedient, I told him everything and he told me I should never to meet up with those guys again. I nodded, but I knew I was going back there, which meant I probably see them again.

For months I went to the fire kingdom and even played with Jack and James, we became close friends and I knew things outside the shadow world were a lot more positive and bright. One day I got home and I saw papa nowhere. Once I went to father to ask where he was, I saw papa looking sorry at me. On the other side father was looking angry at me. "You've disobeyed me, Maria.. You need to be punished so you can learn you cannot be around the enemy." He said, before I knew it I blacked out.

-----------------

I woke up in my room, although everything seemed even more dark than normally. My whole body was sore, I don't know exactly why, but I didn't dare to look into the mirror. "Maria..."
I looked around, seeing papa sitting on a chair. I stood up and slowly walked over to him, which was quite hard when everything hurt. Once I was close to him he placed a hand on my shoulder. "Listen... I can't leave the castle anymore... But you can... You can escape this place." He whispered into my ear. "You'll never get happy here... Lavina told me this a lot of times... The children won't be happy here... They will turn out like 'him', she told me." He told me. "But, I can't leave you and where am I suppose to go?" I said softly. "You'll find a place.... Go, before your father sees you...!" He told me and then I slowly made my way out of the shadow kingdom, because I needed to make sure no one saw me.

The way to the Fire Kingdom was quite a long trip. It was dark outside when I was in a open field. It was also cold and I heard a lot of sounds, which kind of scared me. Since it was dark I wasn't quite sure where the castle was. So I just walked, hoping I would find somewhere to stay. The more I walked the more I wanted to rest, but sleeping outside wouldn't do me any good.

"What are you doing here?" A familiar voice said and then I looked up, seeing James. Before I could say anything he gasped. "You're hurt..! I never have seen so many bruises on a girl's skin before..!" He said and then he frowned. I knew I was sore, but I hadn't looked into a mirror after I woke up. I bit my lip slightly and looked away. He sighed and then he shook his head. "I guess I should bring you along with me... I thought you had opened up to us, but I something must have happened if you're here at this hour..." He said when he suddenly lifted me up. I yelped softly and he simply carried me in bridal style, making me blush.

"You're making things awkward when you're blushing like that... It gives people the wrong idea..." He mumbled, looking slightly embarrassed now. "Y-you shouldn't carry me like this..." I mumbled, pouting a bit.

-----------

It took months before the people in the fire kingdom and the king trusted me. Jack was quite pleased about that, because he helped me to get the people to trust me. James was often teasing me when I was doing some chores around the castle, which often annoyed me.... Stupid James... Yet he was charming me in some way... Strange...
