Chapter One

10 Years and 363 Days Earlier

"Make a wish, sweetheart!" My mom, Clarice, whispered in my ear.

I looked at the candle on top of the small red velvet cupcake. I watched it flicker. I thought long and hard about what to wish for. I closed my eyes. Finally, I thought of something. Something that would be my wish for every birthday I had until I was sixteen: I want to have an adventure like no other. I opened my eyes and blew out the candle.

10 Years and 363 Days Later

"You have a soccer game at five tonight and I can't take you, so can you walk?" Clarice, my mom, asked me while getting ready for work.

"Sure, Mom." I said grinding my teeth. She can never take me, she always has work.

Clarice stopped getting ready and looked at me, "Honey, I would take you, but I have to work late tonight."

"Yeah, I know. You always have work," I told her and rolled my eyes and put my cereal bowl in the sink. "You're not going to miss my birthday right?"

"Of course I won't. I never do." My mom replied planting a kiss on my forehead.

I smiled feeling a bit better. I checked my watch and saw that I had to go to school. I grabbed my bag and rushed out the door. The school was just a half a mile away from my house so I could easily walk it.

I shivered in my shorts and T-shirt. It was only September but it was about fifty degrees outside! This is kind of crazy, I live in Australia for God's sakes! Isn't it supposed to be warmer! It must be because my backyard is the ocean. Ocean breeze must be the answer.

I approached my best friend's house. I knocked on the door until it opened.

"Hey, bitch!" She smiled at me. She flipped her silky, straight brown hair, her blue eyes gleaming.

"Hey, hoe!" I replied as we walked down the steps to the street. Michelle and I have been like sisters ever since the first grade when she stood up for me when I was being bullied by some older kids. We are so close nothing could ever separate us.

We reached the school grounds and joined our clique: the soccer jocks. The unbeatable Eagles.

"Hey guys," Lance, a boy who didn't make the boys high school soccer team approached us.

"Hi, Lance," I whispered and we all turned away from him.

"What a loser," my friend, Caitlin and the forward on our soccer team, said.

We all agreed except me. "Don't be so harsh." I mumbled. I didn't like Lance. No one did. Except for the little sluts that ran around the school drooling over every guy that wasn't gay.

"You? Being nice? To Lance!?" I heard from a familiar voice behind me. I turned around to find Lucas, the captain of the boys soccer team. I was surprised to see him. Lucas is a blond haired, tan skinned trouble maker. He wasn't nice to many people either, only his close friends and some girls that he is interested in. He never has talked to me, ever! I looked at him like he was crazy. I searched for Lance but he must have left. "Hold on! Let me find my phone so I can tape this!"
