Chapter Two
*Happy Birthday*
"Selena, wake up," a hand shook my shoulder. "Wake up, birthday girl!"
I moaned, "Can't I just eat cake in bed?"
Mother snickered, "No, you cannot. C'mon I have breakfast waiting downstairs and a surprise when you get home."
"Okay," I hauled myself out of my comfy haven and got ready. When I came down the steps and into the kitchen I saw Clarice put a beautiful pink tulip in the single flower holder in front of my breakfast.
"Awww, thanks," I hugged her and dug into the healthy but delicious looking french toast and energy shake.
"You are so very welcome. Happy birthday," she planted a kiss on my head and whistled. I looked up at her in confusion but she just smiled.
Then Michelle walked, "Knock, knock! Where is the birthday girly-pie?"
I chuckled and yelled, "Kitchen!"
When she walked in, my jaw dropped to the polished wooden floor. In her hands, she was holding, the cutest puppy in the world. A puppy that I have always wanted: a black labrador.
Her long pink tongue was hanging out of her mouth as she looked at me with big, sad, chocolate brown eyes.
"Awwwwwww! Is she yours?" I asked petting the excited puppy.
"Nope, she's yours," she said holding her out to me. I looked up at her, surprised, then I looked at my mother.
"Are you, like, for real?" I asked taking her away from Shell.
They smirked. "Yes, I am sweetie," Clarice said. "Do you want to name her? She hasn't been named yet."
"Ariel? How about that?" I asked.
"Hmmm, it definitely works." Clarice said.
"Ariel it is." I smiled at the cute puppy in my arms. "Hi there, Ariel."
Ariel licked my face and panted. "Ewww, dog slobber!" I said, laughing.
I glanced at the kitchen clock. "Oh no! We're gonna be late! C'mon Misha!"
Michelle half-growled, "Don't call me that!"
I smirked and ignored her, "Mom? I'm gonna do some training tonight!"
"Okay, honey! I'll see you when you get home! Bye!" She yelled as we ran out the door.
"Sel!" Misha called.
"What?" I asked as Michelle dug through her bag and threw me the keys to her older brother's car.
"Drive us," she beamed.
"What?! I don't even get my license until tomorrow!" I yelled as she pulled me to the curb, where the car was parked.
"So what? If we are about to get into trouble, we can just switch seats." Michelle said hopping in.
"I don't know..."
"Oh, just get in. We are going to be late!" Shell snapped.
"Okay, okay!" I surrendered and started the small car. "How did you get your brother to let you use this?"
"Oh, my dear Selena, you know I can be very convincing." Misha smirked.
"No, no, no, no, no! You didn't!" She looked at me innocently. I groaned, "Oh my god, you did. He is going to be so mad at you!"
Misha shrugged, "I've stolen his car before, no biggie."
I sighed. Good old, bad-ass Michelle. We pulled into the school parking lot and parked. I gave her back her keys and we walked up to the school. I got showered with 'happy birthdays' from people I didn't even know I knew. We hurried to our group of friends and they all hugged me and wished me a happy birthday.
"So, what is the birthday girl doing tonight? Partying? Chillin'?" Caitlin dragged on.
"Try training, Cat." Michelle said.
Caitlin's eyes widened, "Training? Really? Jeez, do you even know how to have fun?"
I raised my eyebrows. Caitlin looked at me confused and then it clicked. A year ago, when I turned fifteen, I went to a party that my friend, Chloe, threw for me. I ended up getting high on soda that was spiked and was bouncing off the walls, literally. I was dancing on tables and ran around topless in my bra. I didn't sleep a wink until four days later when I passed out from exhaustion.
Caitlin laughed and everyone around us looked at us as if we were mental. "Now I remember. That was hilarious!"
I ground my teeth, "No, it wasn't. I had people calling me names all week after that! I was everyone's bra buddy!"
Caitlin laughed and abruptably stopped, "Sel, that is so lame. Bra buddy? Really?"
I shrugged. Cat chuckled and held up a medium sized box with a bow. "What's this?" I eyed her.
"Your birthday present." She held it up and I cautiously took it from her. I pulled the ribbon off the box. I took the lid off of the box and the box puked on me. It puked up glitter and confetti. I glared at Caitlin as she burst in laughter.
"Great. Now I'm gonna look like a stupid sparkly child all day!" I screamed.
"Hey, hey, hey. You need some chaos today! Now you can be everyone's glitter buddy!" She exclaimed. I gave her my best hate glare.
"Love you too, Bitch!" Cat smiled. "Finish opening it!"
I sighed and dug inside the box. I came up with cotton fabric, Soffe shorts. The shorts were a sea blue with glittery letters that read: LOVE YOU TOO BITCH! I smiled. This was the most clever idea that Caitlin has ever come up with.
"Thanks," I hugged her.
The rest of my little clique gave me a $50 visa gift card. I thanked them and the rest of the day blew by fast. I was enjoying my sweet sixteenth birthday.
Michelle and I drove to her house to find a very angry brother. He started yelling at her and that was my cue to leave. "Bye, Misha!" I yelled. She didn't even notice the nickname. I rolled my eyes and strolled down the street.
"I'm home!" I yelled to my mom who had taken the day off.
"Sweetheart? I'm in the living room, care to join?" Uh-oh, that was her all serious/ sad voice. I walked into the living room where my mom was perched on the sofa. She tapped the cushion next to her. I plopped down.
"Where's Ariel?" I asked.
"Sleeping on that rug," My mom pointed to the old rug by the back door. I smiled as she opened her sleepy eyes.
"Honey, I want to give you something," Clarice reached into the pocket of her hoodie and pulled out an old, small box. "Before your father left, he told me to give this to you on your sixteenth birthday. He told me to tell you that you're very special, that you're not normal. I told him that he was crazy, that I there was nothing wrong with my daughter. He made me promise to tell you this. I had no choice, it was his last wish." Clarice was starting to shed tears. The F word is always a touchy subject.
"What do you mean special?" I asked, a little freaked out.
"I don't know! He didn't tell me anything about it!" She cried.
"Mom, it's okay!" I comforted her.
She wiped away her tears and held out the box. I took it from her cautiously. I opened the lid and gasped.
