Chapter Three
I opened the box and gasped. Inside the box was sand, and nestled in the sand was a locket. It was oval and gold and turquoise. It had an interesting flower on the top half and a shattered pearl on the bottom. It literally looked like a pearl was broken into a million pieces and nestled in the back of the locket. On the chain there was a little blue diamond that I had never seen before. I looked up at my mom, my eyes becoming glassy. "Thanks, Mom." I said and hugged her.
She sighed and shed a tear, "I can't believe how fast you grew."
"I'm not done growing yet," I said putting on the locket, not even knowing that those words were completely true. I kissed Clarice's forehead and went over to pet Ariel.
"While you were at school, I bought a bunch of dog stuff for Ariel. The food is in the garage and her toys and bed are in your room.
"Great, thanks," I said. "Today's a training day, so I'm gonna take the boat out."
"On your birthday? Are you sure?" She asked.
"Yeah. I might have a sponser offer so I need to practice for the dive. It takes place Friday." I said grabbing some of my gear that was in the storage closet.
"Okay. Be home before eleven though. I want to watch the solar eclipse with you." She said and waved.
"Eleven. Got it! Bye!" And with that I rushed to the boat.
I zoomed across the ocean and found a fairly deep spot. I set up the bouee's and my emergency camera in case I ran out of breath or passed out. I threw on my wet suit and sat on the floor of the boat for about twenty minutes to lower my heart rate and to relax me. I slowly got up and put on my goggles and my mono fin. I took a deep breath and dived.
Ten Minutes Later
It took me about five minutes down and five minutes up. I managed to release the seventy meter bouee. It was my best practice dive ever and I felt proud. I couldn't get too excited or I could get injured. So I sat on the floor for another ten minutes and slowly started to drift to sleep. I fell into unconsciousness.
I got startled awake as the wind blew through me. I shivered. Before I did anything, I put on some clothes to warm me up. My teeth chattered and I looked around me. I was about twenty meters away from an island, a small island. It looked deserted. I shivered again and tried to start up the boat. The engine roared and then died down to a hum. I smiled and that was when I heard beeping. The red light was flashing, telling me that there is most likely a crack in the boat. I went to the lower deck and the water was ankle deep. I freaked out. I pressed the button that called the emergency people but the button was broken.
"Shit," I whispered. I grabbed my bag and gear and threw them in the emergency escape row boat. I grabbed anything else that I thought was valuable to my mom or me and jumped into the small boat. I started rowing as I saw my father's boat sink further into the sea.
I reached the island and pulled the boat onto the white sandy beach. I knew I should stay by the mini boat but curiosity took over. I grabbed my water proof flashlight out of my bag and headed toward the palm trees.
The wind shrieked and became faster. I hoped that I wasn't in the middle of a hurricane. I sighed as I reached the center of the island. I couldn't find anything. No food. No fresh water. I leaned against a small tree and it tilted slightly. Then, I was falling. I only fell a couple feet so I didn't hurt myself. I landed in soft sand that seemed like it was shimmering.
I gasped as I turned around in the cave and found a small pool of dark blue water. It was only about three meters in width and length. I smiled and touched the water. It was warm but not hot. It was definitely salt water and there seemed to be a tunnel, possibly leading to the ocean. Or a dead end. I decided to take a dip and see if I could get through the tunnel and back to my boat. Luckily I was only wearing a T-shirt and shorts. I dove in, and as soon as I was in I knew it was a mistake.
The water swirled all around me, like it was dragging me down but never got me below the surface. I panicked but I couldn't move. Then, I heard The Voice. It was inside my head, but clearly wasn't my imagination. I've been waiting for you, Selena. It said.
Who are you? I questioned back.
I am not important. You are the key to the legend. You have the locket. It whispered.
What legend? I screeched back.
The mer legend. The Voice fading.
Mer? I asked off guard.
Yes. It said and then disappeared.
I shook my head. I looked up and saw a small hole that seemed to widen. It got big enough for me to glimpse at the solar eclipse. Suddenly, my eyes felt like they were burning. Burning out of my skull. I screamed in agony and then everything went black.
The Voice? what's that? heehee that was the end of this chapter. hoped ya liked it!!! Sorry it was short!!! Oh and the pic is of the locket. but im sure you figured that out :)
