the dream was worse this time.
the world was a battlefield of fire and destruction. the ground cracked and split beneath my feet, molten lava spilling out and swallowing everything in its path. heroes were lying dead in the ground—mostly charred and the air burned in my lungs, acrid and heavy.
"touya!" i screamed, my voice hoarse. "stop this, please!"
he stood in the middle of the chaos, his body alight with blue flames. his face, even more scarred and twisted, was unreadable, but his eyes glowed with unrelenting anger.
"stop?" he repeated, a cruel smile pulling at his lips. "isn't this what you wanted?"
"no," i choked out, stumbling forward, the heat searing my skin and my feet moving carefully as to not step on the burned remains of heroes.
"you said you'd never leave me," he said, stepping closer, his voice a mocking echo of promises we once made.
"touya, please," i begged.
he reached for me, his hand blazing, and for a moment, i thought he might take it. but then his fingers tightened around my throat, and the flames surged.
"you don't get to beg," he whispered. "not after you fucking betrayed me, y/n."
the fire consumed me, blistering my skin, burning me alive. i could smell it—my own flesh melting away.
and then i woke up.
i shot upright, my chest heaving, my skin clammy despite the cold air of my room.
the silence was deafening, broken only by my ragged breathing. i touched my arms instinctively, running my fingers over the raised scars that snaked up from my forearms and my legs, disappearing under the sleeves of my shirt and the shorts. the burns—they covered most of my body now, a testament to his anger. even my face bore faint marks, one just beneath my left cheekbone, the other one beneath my right eye.
i turned to the nightstand. the promise necklace and medallion sat there, untouched, but their presence felt heavier than ever. with the medallion's engraved sentence haunting me:
plus que ma propre vie.
a bitter laugh escaped me. more than my own life. was it really more than your own life touya?the irony wasn't lost on me.
i noticed the hour on my phone and decided that i needed to distract myself, maybe do some exercise instead of just sleeping again.
i really didn't want for the nightmare to continue.
