my body felt... off. not the kind of soreness that came with pushing my limits, but something deeper, nagging at the edge of awareness. fried chicken. the thought hit me as i sat up, rubbing my temple. that was the last thing i ate, hours before the whole ordeal.
i stretched, my muscles protesting from the strain of yesterday. the adrenaline, the chaos-it all left its mark. but this wasn't just physical. there was an unease, like my body knew something i hadn't quite figured out yet.
i caught my reflection in the bathroom mirror, toothbrush in hand. pale. tired. not surprising, considering i barely slept. as i brushed my teeth, flashes of last night crept in, uninvited. ayumi's lifeless face. the way the light in her eyes had vanished.how i desperately tried to bring her back to life.
then keigo, his lips brushing mine in the very room i stood in now. warmth, reassurance, confusion. my hand stilled mid-motion, foam threatening to spill from my mouth as i stared at my reflection.
shit. i really had done that.
what the hell are we now?
should we talk about it?
my groan echoed in the small space as i spat into the sink, rinsing with more vigor than necessary. "get it together," i muttered, wiping my mouth. today wasn't the day to let my emotions spiral as usual.
i glanced at my phone, hoping for a distraction, but all it did was remind me of the day ahead. messages regarding yesterday's events. updates about the families of other victims. i placed it face down and let the faint smell of cooking lure me out of the bathroom.
keigo was still here.
he stood by the stove, golden hair slightly messy but glowing in the morning light. he moved with an ease that made it seem like he'd been cooking in my kitchen forever. when he glanced over his shoulder, his golden eyes met mine, warm and calm.
"good morning," he said, his voice like sunlight breaking through clouds.
"morning, kei," i replied, leaning against the doorframe.
he turned back to the stove. "i slept in the guest bedroom," he added casually. "didn't want to intrude. also, don't worry about work today-took care of everything. just focus on getting through this."
my stomach growled, betraying my hunger as the smell of miso soup wafted through the air. he'd gone all out-grilled fish, rice, pickled vegetables. even tea.
"kei, you didn't have to do all this," i said softly, sitting down.
he shrugged, placing a plate in front of me. "someone's gotta take care of you. you didn't even have dinner yesterday."
